Are there any decent monitors? Bought 7 already…

Post by Jocser » 04 Feb 2023, 12:13

Hi Guys,

I run a triple monitor setup for simracing

I went through one Samsung Odyssey G9 49” ultrawide. 240hz VA.
Than 3x32” Samsung G7. 240hz as well.

Always had blur when a lot was moving. Now i bought gigabyte FI32Q. Fast IPS 1ms gtg.
Its a kittel beter but i still got blur. It has strobing but its shit. It gives ghosting.

Will 48” LG oled tv be better?

I really need a blur Free monitor. Makes me crazy!!!

There is no such monitor.

Also, there's more than one form of blur, and they can stack, so what form of blur are you referring to? Smearing, ghosting, double image, etc?

I have No idea What it is. I think its ghosting. Its Sharp but when i take a corner the whole image gets unsharp.

In a previous post the chief advised hz=fps and strobing on. This monitor has aim stabilizer which is strobing. I set It at 120hz and locked fps to 120 and gpu delivers a stable 120 fps.
When I activate strobing the image stayer clearer, but when i drive for 5 minutes, I can still see Some flicker 30minutes afterwards So that s not ideal.

Strobed monitors, even with stable Hz = FPS have varying degrees of motion artifacts, including crosstalk:
https://blurbusters.com/faq/advanced-st ... stalk-faq/

And stroboscopic effect due to finite framerates:
https://blurbusters.com/the-stroboscopi ... -displays/

Strobed OLED won't have crosstalk due to its near instantaneous pixel response times, but it will still have stroboscopic effect, which there's no getting rid of without higher refresh rates + framerate ratios.

Flickering is a side effect of how strobing works. And do you mean your vision flickers for 30 minutes after stepping away from your strobed displays, or?

Yes thats What i mean. I still see Some Orange like flicker after stepping away. I already notice it when racing for 2 minutes.

And for the blur or ghosting whatever it is (the not clear ufo’s) I have had 5 persons here who tested my simulator, 2 of them being my brothers, and none of them seem to notice the blur. They say i am crazy and seeing things.. the thing is awesome They say.

But It is reallllyyyy there! Time for good non blur (oled?) monitors!!

OLEDs have some minor flicker even outside blur reduction modes. If u're extremely sensitive to this stuff that might be an issue.

As jorimt said there are multiple forms of blur. Its important to identify the most distracting one so you can start looking for solutions.

I'd like to point out that there is blur free monitor for situations where eye is tracking objects on screen. But unfortunately for stationary gaze (stroboscopic effect/phantom array stepping/blur) there is no solution yet.

Your eyes must be more light sensitive than average then, thus retaining after-images longer than usual (I.E. what everyone experiences momentarily after a camera flash goes off, etc).

If that's the case, strobing may not be the best method for you, even though it's really the only method that can reduce image persistence on sample-and-hold displays (OLED and LCD) right now.

While OLED has no crosstalk when strobed, there's virtually no strobing OLED monitors right now. And the ones that do are LG TVs, but their latest model have strobing modes that are too mild to make any real dent in persistence blur.

For instance, I have the LG CX, which is the only recent OLED TV to have an aggressive enough strobing mode to make an impact on image persistence, but as a result, it has heavy flicker and it's very, very dim, and even then, it only manages 3-4ms MPRT, whereas the best strobed LCDs can achieve as low as 1ms MPRT (at the expense of some crosstalk, of course).

So basically, if you went with an OLED monitor (or three), they would be non-strobed, which means while you wouldn't have any more noticeable smearing or ghosting, you would have lots of noticeble image doubling during panning due to the sample-and-hold nature of OLED and finite framerates + refresh rate.

Anyway, seeing as you've already gone through 7 monitors, my advice at this stage is to purchase a single 240Hz 1440p OLED monitor and try it in the same scenarios while keeping your framerate as close to 240Hz as possible. If blur is better for you, complete your surround setup with two more (if applicable).

If not, then you may have to consider there is no monitor currently in existence that can meet your expectations and that you'll have to settle with the "least" blurry for your use case, whatever that ends up being for you.

Thanks for answers!! Maybe its smearing in my case.

Also something whats not clear to me. One of the monitors I have had was Samsung 49” 5120x1440 240hz. Its the Odyssey G9. It also had blur.
But one of the monitors in the blur busters approved list is the older 49” CHG90. 3840x1080 144hz and that Should he better than?

The only officially "Blur Busters Approved Monitors" (aka validated by Blur Busters directly) are in the pictured section on the monitor list pages site-side:

'List of Best Gaming Monitors – 120Hz, 144Hz, 240Hz, FreeSync, G-SYNC I Blur Busters' - blurbusters.com.png

The rest of the monitor models are just regular listings.

And no, I highly doubt the 144Hz CHG90 has better motion clarity than the 240Hz Odyssey G9, but you could Google them both and see if site's like RTINGS have reviewed them to confirm.
