Difference between hz in windows and ingame?

Post by Synnx90 » 11 Mar 2023, 16:31

I'm not sure how to explain this question well, but why is there a difference between 360hz in windows + 240hz in game (Overwatch), and 240hz in windows + 240hz in game.

I use to own a BenQ XL2546K and I played Overwatch at 240hz and was very comfortable, I switched to an Asus PG259QN which is 360hz, And I played at 360hz + 240hz in game for a very long time, and if I open the monitor menu in game, it says its at 1920x1080@240, But it feels and looks noticeably different at 360hz in windows + 240hz in game than it does with 240hz/240hz.

I know this because I cant seem to aim at all on 240hz/240hz anymore, but 360hz/240hz feels and looks better as I am most likely use too it by now as I have used it like that for months, though it does some times feel like I am missing shots that should have hit.

Its starting to confuse me and I am now wondering if I have being using it wrong the whole time, and if I am actually missing 120 frames.

Does anyone have any experience of information they could share regarding this?

Thanks.

Do you notice a difference between 360Hz windows + 240Hz in-game and 360hz windows + 360hz in-game?

Hey, i've been intriged and did a lot of researches about, but perhaps it's only your own perception due to having this monitor recently, or something else unknown to me about you.

So i found some parameters to consider, that you'd want try to find if those could be the cause of the game working like it does in the current state of things :

//

G-Sync ON ?
Frame rate cap ?
Do you hit the cap ?

G-Sync emulating V-Sync at "max refresh rate" could play a role !
NVCP's "Prefer Max Refresh Rate" too !
Window/Fullscreen mode also !

Is it monitor OSD that reports hz ?

A frame limiter that is used could be culprist !?

Monitor OSD could claim to run at "240 Hz" while NVCP's overriding it to 360 Hz !
And if the game caps at 240 Hz, could be that "360 Hz / 240 Hz" is in fact a 240 FPS capped on a 360 Hz display, meaning VRR + no V-Sync latency !

FSE (exclusive fullscreen) in-game, but FSO (fullscreen optimisations) enabled ?!

Desktop set at 360 Hz refresh rate and game set to 240 Hz FSE -> FSO, so no V-Sync latency !..
... instead if set 240 Hz in Windows it'll hit V-Sync penalty !!

G-Sync is off, Framerate cap is at 300, I have fullscreen optimisations disabled.

I was thinking that the OSD was claiming its 240hz but its actually running at 360hz, And as im using a 300fps cap, its not displaying all frames.
