Looking for a 27 inch 1440p 144Hz monitor

Post by EvolutionBG » 15 Jun 2023, 10:03

Hello! I'm looking for a 27 inch 1440p 144Hz monitor.
Last year I bought LG 27GN800-B, but I was very disappointed and recently managed to sell it.

What I did not like in 27GN800:
1. Massive IPS glow in the lower left corner, always visible, not only on dark corners / scenes. So I'm looking for something with low minimum brightness.
2. Horizontal banding in the light colors a.k.a. gray uniformity at the upper part of the screen. Annoying every time I look up (the sky) in games.
3. Inversion artifacts at lower refresh rates / FPS with G-Sync on (or manually selected 60Hz for example). I have GTX 1650 Super / Ryzen 5 3600 , so most of the games run with around 70 FPS. CS GO runs with 200+fps, so the artifacts are not that noticeable. I mostly play CS GO, BeamNG and like to test some new games (not really playing them).
4. The contrast was noticeable lower than my old Philips 227EQ4H IPS monitor.
5. There was some dirty screen effect. Nothing that annoying.
6. Terrible stand but I have desk mount arm Arctic X1-3D. So it doesn't matter.
7. The matte finish on the plastic feel very cheap and bad to look at.

The good about 27GN800:
1. Response time and refresh rate of 144Hz / G-Sync - it's fast and smooth experience without any ghosting.
Coming from Philips 227EQ4H IPS 60Hz 21.5 inch (recently found out it supports 75Hz and I can feel the 15Hz difference).
2. The menu and that I could adjust sharpness.
3. Colors and Brightness / Minimum brightness could be a little lower, but still a good value.

What I'm looking in the new monitor (27 inch, 1440p, 144 Hz around ~400 euro): (in order of importance):

1. Avoid inversion artifacts at lower refresh rates. Absolutely hate to see these.
2. Good gray uniformity is very important to me. Absolutely hate visible banding / lines.
3. G-Sync / Freesync is important (but all of them have it now).
4. Contrast ratio around 900:1 - 1000:1
5. Reasonable IPS glow - I don't mind a normal glow, but not that too much.
6. Minimum brightness around 55 cd/m or lower.

Not that important:
1. I don't mind 8 bits (per channel) colors. I think I want to avoid FRC (8 bit + FRC) because I read here it can cause artifacts.
2. Response time - I'm playing competitive only CS GO, so I could sacrifice this.
3. Colors and color accuracy are not that important.

What I tested so far:
Lenovo G24qe-20 23.8", IPS, 1440p, 100Hz

The good:
1. Picture quality was crystal clear and I fall in love with it. Even though it's 8 bit (vs LG - 10 bit)
2. Absolutely no dirty screen effect.
3. IPS glow was minimal. No bleeding too.
4. No inversion artifacts even at 50 Hz.

The bad:
1. The need of scaling (of 125%) and then everything becomes blurry.
2. No sharpness settings (Why, Lenovo)?
3. 100 Hz refresh rate felt a bit slow (as 75 Hz monitor).
4. Less practical than the sweet 27" 1440p ~108 PPI. Looking good, but working (3D modelling) on it is not as convenient.
5. A bit slow when changing resolutions / modes.
So I returned this otherwise lovely monitor and gave up the idea of PPI higher than 108.

I have shortlisted these monitors (not in any order yet):

1. LG 27GP850P-B - https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/lg/27gp850-b-27gp83b-b; https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/19b42686;
- Even lower contrast due to the nano IPS panel;
- Huge IPS glow (on all LG panels?);
- It's 10 bits (8 bits + FRC) panel, so probably will have inversion artifacts as 27GN800;
+ Minimum brightness is very good - 22 cd/m²;
+ Excellent response times;

2. MSI Optix G273QF - https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/msi/optix-g273qf; https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/878622f0
- No HDR, somewhat low SDR brightness;
- Bad gray / black uniformity;
+ Good response times;
+ Contrast ratio of ~1200:1;
+ Native 8 bits (no FRC) - no inversion artifacts at lower frames rates?;
+ Less IPS glow?;
+ Minimum brightness is 58 cd/m²

3. Gigabyte G27Q - https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/gigabyte/g27q; https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/c7111ec7
- Slower response times - not that important for me;
- A bit of ghosting at 60Hz - not that important for me;
+ Good SDR Brightness, HDR support;
+ Native 8 bits (no FRC) - no inversion artifacts at lower frames rates?;
+ Contrast ratio of ~1100:1;
+ Minimum brightness is 60 cd/m²;

4. Dell S2721DGF - https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/dell/s2721dgf; https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/da672043;
- Low contrast ratio ~882:1;
- Bad black uniformity;
- 10 bits (8 bits + FRC), so probably will have inversion artifacts as 27GN800?;
+ OK gray uniformity;
+ Good SDR Brightness;
+ Minimum brightness is 35 cd/m²;
+ Excellent response times;

5. ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQL1A
- 10 bits (8 bits + FRC), so probably will have inversion artifacts as 27GN800?;
- Minimum brightness is 76 cd/m²;
+ OK contrast of 1,016:1;
+ Good gray uniformity;
+ OK response time (there is some ghosting);

Never tried VA panel, but I'm scared of color shifts / artifacts.
- AOC AG275QXN/EU - non curved*?

It's been really tough for me in last couple of days... :( I would really appreciate some advice, thank you very much! :)

Hi! I recently bought a LG 27GN800-B monitor, and this glow effect in the left corner is really pissing me off, in fact glow on this monitor is very noticeable, even in non-dark scenes. I thought I was just unlucky in the lottery, but you literally described my thoughts about this monitor. So, have you found a worthy replacement? I still have time to return it to the shop, so I'm urgently looking for a monitor to replace this LG. Its colors, brightness and hz are completely satisfactory to me, but this glow....
