Post by koerz » 29 Aug 2023, 07:50

Hello, I have a LG 27gp850-B, I've had terrible ghosting for about 1 month, or I think it's ghosting, I posted a picture on Reddit.

I've tried all the settings but I can't get the problem under control

i use a 4070ti

If you're referring to the image doubling in your capture, you've ruled out it's not due to your overdrive/in-game settings and the games themselves, and it is typically most apparent for you when a character or the screen rapidly pans, then you're probably seeing the "Stroboscobic Effect," which is caused by finite refresh + framerates, and is more evident the faster the pixel response time of the display is + the speed of movement is on said display.

There's no "fix" or mitigation beyond 1) achieving higher refresh + framerates than currently possible, 2) using heavier post-process motion blur to help mask the effect, 3) going back to an older LCD monitor with slower pixel response times to help mask the effect.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the lower the native GtG + better the overdrive, the more apparent the stroboscopic effect is. In other words, older, slower monitors have a tendency to mask the effect more.

That said, I'm not even sure from your screenshot it is the stroboscopic effect you're seeing in your case. I only said if you ruled everything else out it would be. Looks more like monitor ghosting, game-side post-process effects, and/or however you captured the image that is creating/exaggerating the issue depicted (or a mix of all).

For instance, I installed POE today and tried the tutorial, and I'm not even seeing how you are triggering fast enough panning to capture that effect; character and camera movement seem to be extremely slow in that game.

Anyway, I see you've already tried all your overdrive presets and that didn't help either, and I assume you're not using your monitor's strobing mode, since you said you tried 185Hz too, which doesn't support strobing on that model.

So the question is, is there any game on that monitor that doesn't have that issue? If so, it's not the stroboscopic effect, as said effect will apply to all games equally since it's a physical limitation of all monitors and not dependent on the monitor model/type, the system, or games.

Got the MSI Optix mag274qrf and its the same.

In Diabblo 4 i saw that the first time when mounting up and ride fast, in Fortnite i see this only in High Gras when moving fast

the best example is here: https://www.testufo.com/framerates-vers ... =1&kiosk=1

when focus on the left HZ Number i see in the background this effect

when i focus on the moving picture its all perfect

I hoe its not my system or graphic card..?!

No, it's not your system or your graphics card. What you're describing is the stroboscopic effect. Did you not read the article I linked in my first reply?
https://blurbusters.com/the-stroboscopi ... -displays/

It even has a Test UFO pattern that exhibits the effect:
https://www.testufo.com/eyetracking#embed=1&speed=-1

If that's what you're referring to, there's nothing to "fix;" it will happen on every monitor to a degree.

I repeat:
There's no "fix" or mitigation beyond 1) achieving higher refresh + framerates than currently possible, 2) using heavier post-process motion blur to help mask the effect, 3) going back to an older LCD monitor with slower pixel response times to help mask the effect.

What you described in your latest reply was the stroboscopic effect. If that specific issue wasn't "happening" earlier this year, and now it is for you, then it must mean you've only just started noticing the effect that was always there; one of those "once you see it, you can't unsee it" sort of things.

Because I guarantee you, the stroboscopic effect has always been on every consumer display. It's a pure physics limitation.

If it's something else, you're not explaining it well enough, and you've ruled out overdrive settings, so I have nothing else to add at this time.

Are 27GP850 and MAG274QRF your first high refresh rate monitors? Because that might explain why u didn't notice the effect before.
At 60Hz the distance between each frame/image in stroboscopic effect is wider compared to high refresh rate. It's harder to focus on target when u see multiples of it narrowly spaced next to each other, but when more widely spaced it is easier. That's one of the theories.
