After what refresh rate did you stop feeling the improvement in smoothness?

Post by Cwuster12 » 22 Feb 2024, 10:28

So far I have only been able to try 75, 85, 120 and 144 Hz and each time I felt that the smoothness of the picture increased.
People who have 240, 360 and 500 Hz panels, do you notice this? If not, then after what level do you stop noticing an increase in smoothness?

I guess it depends on the person since a lot of people on youtube comment not noticing a difference above 144hz which I find bizarre. I have noticed a difference at every single jump, the slightest amount makes all the difference.

I first tried 144hz, it wasn't smooth enough and I noticed a LOT more motion blur in comparison to 60hz.
I tried 360hz, it's a big improvement but I still wanted it to be smoother and at 1080p instead of 1440p.

I've yet to try anything above 360hz. I hope 500hz will be the sweet spot for me (but it probably won't be lol!)

By the way, they used to say this too (and even now in many places) that there is a small difference between 60 and 144 (well, if THIS is a small difference, then I sympathize with them). I really want to see the 240 hz panel.

Yeah, if you say that 360Hz is not enough for you, then my guess is partially confirmed (the higher the speed of movement, the more frames you need (provided that the monitor can show them) so that the movement is pixel-by-pixel and, as a result, smooth as butter in a frying pan)

Unconventional 280Hz. I notice a difference to 240Hz. I use no syncs, no strobing, fixed refresh and Hz=fps or higher fps. On 240Hz i notice blur and tearing on fast swipes, but at 280Hz, i guess it blends in with my personal capability of detecting blur and tearing virtually disappears. I also started with 75Hz, then 144, so its a natural progression. i actually dont need anything higher. I want to buy one of the new 360Hz Oleds, and if they need DSC, i will try to lower to 280Hz to benefit from perfekt refresh compliance and no dsc.

60/75 -> 144Hz is massive obviously.

when I first moved from 144 to 240 in early 2017 , I did notice the mouse moving even smoother on windows desktop and... in-game it was like a "micro-correction" to my aim... I did feel it quite a bit.

then I started studying and using my laptop (which is 144hz) for a almost 2 years straight and I bought the XL2566K at the end of 2023 - from 144 to 360 it is very VERY noticable.. but I guess if I had used the 240hz right before switching.. it would seem kind of like from 144 to 240.

if u're thinking of upgrading from 144 to 360 - without a single doubt I say go for it !

If by smoothness, you mean the fluidity of the animation. Around 160-180fps I would say is where it feels like it's getting maxed out to my eyes.

But if you also mean the other aspects of motion such as how clean and clear it looks. I never stopped feeling an improvement and I probably never will because I'll probably be dead before 20KHZ+ gaming is a thing.

360 Hz on XL2566K was already pretty smooth, but 540 Hz on PG248QP is even smoother, to my eyes. Experienced this on a game with >540 FPS.

In terms of motion clarity, the perceived blur reduction is reduced more and more as the refresh rate is increasing but still behind what a CRT can do at a moderate refresh rate.

In terms of responsiveness and fluidity, it's more subtle, but nothing comparable to jumping from 30 to 60 fps, where it does feel like a rediscovery.
It's a bit similar to resolution : yes it gets more and more sharp, but nothing comparable to the SD to HD jump.
