Good 1080p monitor

Post by roro13200 » 18 Mar 2025, 11:24

Hi, I'm coming to you for advice, please. I just returned my G6 Odyssey OLED 360Hz because unfortunately my eyes can't stand it, and it's becoming unbearable. So, I'm going back to IPS and would like your recommendations. I'm looking for a 1080p screen with a good refresh rate. I mainly play versus games, and some AAA games. Thanks.

The ACER XV242F might be interesting to you, it can be found for a very competitive price point.

Thank you.
I looked but I can't find it on Amazon, and I have to buy it from Amazon.
Do you have another one to recommend?
Do you still recommend TN and very high refresh rates for esports games? (FPS/VS fighting)
Thank you.

OLED's are the best sample & hold experience on the market due to their consistent & low G2G response times, leaving you with the refresh rate as the sole barrier to achieving best possible motion clarity.

I assume you've had some kind of eye strain from your OLED, hence why you're changing.
LCD's, such as the new E-TN's, can be still competitive and are still preferred if one is sensitive to some of flaws of current generation OLED displays.
They also offer better text rendering over current generation OLED's due to their RGB stripe subpixel layout as well.

The XL2546X+, XL2566X+, XL2586X, PG248QP or AOC AG246FK are also decent options to consider. They all sport the new E-TN panel.
Do keep in mind that in FPS-locked games, you can only combat blur in one of the following manners: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=13792

Thanks for your feedback. Yes, I was generally satisfied with the OLED, but the eye strain was truly unbearable, even with the light bar and very low screen brightness.... And what do you think of the Alienware 360Hz 1080p (fps)? Thanks.

You mentioned low screen brightness with your OLED. PWM flicker becomes worse the lower the brightness is on an OLED display.

OLED desktop displays do not employ PWM dimming as a luminance dimming technique.
They use PAM dimming (commonly referred to as "DC dimming"), but they suffer from a different type of flicker.
There's a persistent ~20% brightness drop with a frequency equal to the refresh rate of the panel. The reason this occurs is due to the internal capacitance of the OLED driver causing the voltage drop.

Eye strain is commonly reported on OLED panels, either due to the persistent display scan-out flicker, higher contrast ratio, wide color gamut or text fringing.
The AW2523HF is also a decent option especially for it's price point, albeit not as clear in motion compared to E-TN or OLED due to the slower fall G2G response times.

Thank you for your feedback, I would like to ask you a question regarding the overdrive settings of a screen, whether the recommended setting is fast for a refresh rate of 240hz, how does this work if you play a game at 60fps but with a refresh rate that is still at 240hz?
