1080p 240 Hz on 4K Displays

Post by NLPsajeeth » 07 Jan 2014, 19:02

Has anyone come across any display companies talking about 1080p 240 Hz on 4K Displays at CES?

Thanks, to HDMI 2.0, there should now be enough bandwidth available for 1080p 240 Hz input. From there it should be relatively straight forward for a display to do simple dot-double scaling to turn the 1080p into 2160p (4K UHD). Yet I haven't seen any talk about it. Perhaps there is a technical issue I am not aware of?

Seems like almost every 4K TV coming out in 2014 will have HDMI 2.0. There has been some talk of 240Hz refresh rates on 4K TVs like the LG UB900 Series. But nothing about 1080p 240 Hz input specifically.
LG’s UB9800 Series consists of models with 65-, 79-, 84- and 98-inch screens. These sets have a 240 Hz refresh rate and a Harman-developed multichannel audio system (4.2 channels on the 65-inch, 5.2 on the 79-inch and 7.2 on the 84- and 98-inch models).

Not that I know of, currently.

The "240Hz TV" I hear about, is interpolated (fake frames). What we'd love to see is true 240Hz, especially GSYNC, and possibly strobed.

I'd imagine that a 240Hz G-SYNC display will become available in less than two years.
Meanwhile, cirthix here, shows that 240Hz 1080p is doable, and he's one of the G-SYNC Upgrade Board winners here. Nudge, nudge.

Right, this is due to there not being enough bandwidth in HDMI 1.x to support 240hz input. The panels themselves are capable of 240 Hz refresh though. With HDMI 2.0 there should be enough bandwidth for off the shelf "true 240Hz" at 1080p.

I guess we will have to wait until GPU's support HDMI 2.0 before people start talking about it more.

For convenience, I'll embed the YouTube video here, too:

Technologically, true 240Hz is doable, and there are a few scientific displays such as Vpixxs' that can do a true 500Hz refresh.

Hi guys,

shouldn't HDMI be shunned as a matter of principle? With DisplayPort 1.3 coming around the corner with it's 30+ Gbps bandwidth the marketplace should put it's foot down and demand the best. DP1.3 supports lossless compression as well, similar to memory and ssd controllers. Also, with 420 color subsampling an addition doubling of performance is gained. What's the thought on color quality when it comes to trade offs with speed performance?

With Dolby's HDR Dolby Vision requiring higher quality signals I can see an immediate push for full-spec Rec.2020 advanced display infrastructure that HDMI can't deliver.
