Coming from an XB271HU, trying to decide between Mini-LED and OLED...

Post by lukeman3000 » Today, 02:18

I've had my current monitor (Acer Predator XB271HU bmiprx) for about 8 years now and have really loved it, but I'm starting to feel like I'd really love to upgrade and experience the higher contrast ratio of modern monitor technologies.

OLED is the first obvious choice, but I'm apprehensive because I honestly don't even want to have to think about static images or worry about it in any way (as with my current IPS), but I could potentially be swayed.

Mini-LED is the most attractive to me because it apparently can approximate the experience of an OLED but without the concern of burn-in. So to that end I've been looking at some Mini-LED monitors like this one for example, but I have some concerns/questions:

1. With this monitor specifically, it apparently has a "red tint" issue which is detailed here. Apparently you can fix it, but it's kind of a turn off

2. One of the things I like about my current monitor is that it has a G-Sync module, but many of these Mini-LED monitors (and many modern monitors in general) seem to not have the G-Sync module - was it discontinued? Is it even necessary anymore or is the experience with a "G-Sync Compatible" monitor basically equivalent?

3. I really like the build quality of my monitor and I appreciate the fact that it doesn't look like a super "game" thing

So what are your thoughts on OLED vs Mini-LED and what might you recommend to me that would be an upgrade across the board over my current monitor? For example, would that Xiaomi be a clear upgrade over my Predator IPS, or could it be a downgrade in some ways? I feel like my thoughts aren't very well organized here and I hope that what I'm trying to convey is coming across; basically, I just want an upgrade over my Predator IPS without sacrificing anything, and I'd like to avoid burn-in concerns but I could potentially be swayed otherwise.

I am using a 5 years old LG CX OLED as a PC monitor and I cannot find any burn in. Of course this is just an anecdotal example and is not representative, but I think burn in is a highly exaggerated issue. You can find longevity burn in tests from Rtings. That might be the best evidence you can get right now.

Regarding your wish to get an upgrade: For dark viewing environments I'd never go back to LCD because of their black levels. That was the most significant upgrade when I switched to OLED. Nowadays you cannot even really argue with "but LCD is way brighter", because (at least televisions) like the LG G5 reach over 2000 nits which is really great. I cannot tell about advantages of LCD, others might have more knowledge about that.
