Hi, I'm new to this forum as well as these tweaks but I've done a fair bit of reading and researching but I am still unsure as to what "Single Strobe" does and what are the benefits of enabling it in the service menu when using BenQ's Blur Reduction.

Hope somebody can enlighten me!

Thank you for your time.

EDIT: I just noticed at the end of Falkentyne's post "Remember you can set "Single Strobe" to enabled in the service menu for refresh rates lower than 100hz."

So I guess if I'm going to go with 120hz whilst setting this up I should keep Single Strobe OFF in the service menu?

The ONLY reason I keep single strobe turned off in the service menu is to avoid "Gotchas" like 50hz refresh rates, especially since I do a lot of custom resolutions through the Mstar scaler, (like 3200x1800@60 (by using a vertical total tweak for 3840x2160, which only works at 30hz, and 2560x1440@100hz and 2560x1440@115hz. Sometimes the monitor switches to 50hz and benq never added single strobe data for 50hz, only for 60hz.

50hz does not have single strobe data, but the backlight voltage is still increased as if strobing were supposed to be working, which pushes the backlight current past what you would get with blur reduction off and 100 brightness (about 1.8x brightness level), ( 50hz does have double strobe data, as the original V1 firmware was designed to double strobe at refresh rates lower than 100hz at all times). So 50hz activating when single strobe is enabled can potentially damage the backlight or greatly shorten the lifetime. There is overvoltage protection where the monitor will hard power cycle if the current is sustained too high (without the single strobe signal activated) but still having the brightness that overdriven is a bit scary.

I have the service menu permanently unlocked so if I need a lower refresh rate (like 91hz custom) I just enable single strobe.

Please check my new thread. There's been an updated firmware released for this monitor but it has never been dumped by anyone. I need people to go into their service/factory menus and find the current firmware their monitor are installed with. We need access to the most recent versions.

Hello,

I set up these settings what are mentioned with custom resolution and if I want to use lower res than full hd, it keeps saying "Incorrect cable. Please use the Dual-link DVI cable that came with your monitor". I used toasty patcher, tried without custom resolution and of course I am using dual link dvi. I have searched for this in google, but couldn't find any straightforward solution...

Hope somebody can help me here!

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I am using Asus strix gtx 970 as video card, if it helps..

SVARC:
"Incorrect cable"? Are you using 85hz refresh rate, by any chance?

The incorrect DVI cable error is caused by a problem with single link DVI limits and the monitor expecting a dual link signal but instead it's getting a single link dvi signal at a higher pixel clock where it is expecting dual link instead. (certain pixel clocks give a certain signal to the monitor, which has nothing to do with the cable itself. Once 165 MHz pixel clock is exceeded, the video card should send a dual link dvi signal to the monitor. But the default pixel clock patcher extends the single link limits (slightly). VERY few refresh rates are affected by this, but 1920x1080@85hz is one of the affected refresh rates. This refresh rate isn't default in the EDID, but if you created it as a custom refresh rate, you would get a cable error if using the pixel clock patcher.

You can fix this behavior by unpatching the pixel clocks, then RENAMING the toastyX pixel clock patcher by putting -DL or -dl at the end of the name (before the .exe), and then patch again. This will prevent the patcher from changing the single link DVI limits and will avoid the cable error.

However this will stop display scaled resolutions 1280x720, 1280x840 and 1280x960 from working correctly....they will show up and be reported in the OSD as "640x960"; the only fix for that is to use and force on GPU scaling so everything is scaled from 1920x1080.

Hey Falkentyne,

I am using 120hz both desktop and in-game (forceing 120hz with -freq 120 command, it doesn't work without it either). I tried what you suggested, unfortunately it didn't work.. Should I try with DP? Has it any drawbacks?

Edit: I tried to reach service menu (to play with strobing) with the mentioned button combo what I found in the forum...it doesn't work either.

The key settings listed here have been tested and work.

http://forums.blurbusters.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2467

Sometimes it doesn't work after an AC power off. If the power button does not function at all, press it then quickly hold down the button or button(s) for factory or service menu.

Are you using custom refresh rates? Can you list the timings?
did you unpatch like I said and then rename the patcher to -dl (at the end of the file name) and then repatch?
Did you restart the driver afterwards?

For some reason I can't edit my custom settings, but these are mine (tried to create a new one and it showed exactly the same settings):

Yep, I unpatched, renamed, repatched, and restarted.

Use ToastyX CRU, not the Nvidia control panel.
I don't even have an Nvidia card.

Finally, it worked! Thank you mate!

Just one more little thing: alt-tabbing is really fricking slow..
