What are these weird bar lines I'm getting?

Post by JonSnowShoveler » 02 Dec 2015, 14:22

First I'd like to apologize for being a 60hz scrub. I'm pretty poor and so it's taking me a bit to get the money to buy the 980 TI I want in order to get the Acer Predator XB270HU (Or something equal/better) I want.

I"m wondering if anybody can help me identify why I'm getting horizontal bar interference in my videos I watch. Maybe they are normal for 60hz and I Just never noticed it before, I'm not sure.

It's only happening in certain situations. One example I notice it most often is when I'm watching early episodes of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia on Netflix at 480p @ 23.976fps.

Another great example I noticed it the most on was watching Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on YouTube when watching 720p @ 60fps.

Please open the images from the direct link to see the full sized screenshots to get full detail on them.

His hands is where it's showing up in this screenshot.

Also just recently was watching LinusTechTips in 1080p @ 30fps and caught it in action.

It's only showing up in certain sections of the video as you can see. I can't tell if it's just the way the video is naturally or if it's something wrong with my end. Either way, it's been bothering me a lot. I really hate every time I lose ignorance to things that can never be unseen, like aliasing and crawling, because then I obsess.

I figured if anybody could identify my issue, it would be this forum. Thanks for your time and assistance.

Is that a gsync monitor?
if so it's probably inversion artifacts you're seeing. I can't help with this. It's either inversion artifacts, overdrive artifacts from motion or something related to the gsync module. I'm taking a complete guess here as I simply don't know. Could just be regular old overdrive issues with the panel, or both.

The Asus ROG Swift PG278Q (and sometimes the Benq XL2730Z) are notorious for *GREEN* inversion artifacts like what you're seeing, except you get green lines instead.

Acer H6 Series H226HQLbid Black 21.5" 5ms

That's my monitor. I don't have g-sync running that I know of. I'm also running a GTX 760 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130932

Also tested the inversion @ http://www.testufo.com/#test=inversion, didn't notice any bars like I've had in the screenshots no matter what pixel speed I set the test to. Didn't notice any issue on the ghosting test either.

By the way, is it possible I could be getting these artifacts due to power consumption issues? I've had problems during summer when I was running my portable air conditioner in my room with my computer having graphical issues (terrible horizontal screen tearing in browser videos + microstuttering in games like Killing Floor 2). I haven't tried changing out my CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817139010 for the brand new backup one I have. Also haven't tested the power values as I'm not sure what software to use and what values to compare the results by to see if there's an issue with the power. Really though it seemed my room just didn't have the power required to run the PC and the AC at the same time since basically all of my issues have disappeared now that summer is gone and I don't use the AC anymore.

That's a cheap monitor.
Probably just how the overdrive circuit works. Nothing you can do about it if changing the overdrive/RTA setting doesn't do anything (if it even has an overdrive setting). If it's because of the video card, I can't help with that. I am on the AMD camp.

Oh ok, I figured it might be the monitor in general anyways. It's fine if it's just from being a cheap monitor because I can fix that with money and know that it's being fixed. I really want to upgrade, like I said, to the Acer Predator XB270HU, but I figured why bother if I can't pump out the FPS needed to maximize the monitor, so I need to upgrade the GPU first. The only thing bad I found from hours and hours and hours of reading on the XB279HU was that people were having issues with it arriving with dead pixels, though I suppose that's likely a risk anybody can encounter just like other electronics.

BTW, I edited my post above your most recent with questions on power consumption. :p

That's interlacing, nothing to do with your display.
I'm not sure why you're seeing that, since nearly all media is progressive scan rather than interlaced these days.
Most of the time that it happens is because whoever was encoding the video had interlaced footage and forgot to deinterlace it.

I checked the LTT video that you posted and it's definitely part of the video.
As I said, I don't know why they would be using interlaced video anywhere, but the problem is on their end.

With the John Oliver stuff, they probably recorded 1080i (for broadcast?) and uploaded that to YouTube without deinterlacing it.

Thanks so much for the feedback, Glide. I'm assuming the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is due to it being old also, as I was watching earlier seasons and back then they barely had a budget.

Sorry I took so long to respond to this post. For some reason blurbusters was down for a few days and then I got distracted with other things so I didn't remember to check back.

Good news though! I ordered my EVGA 980 Ti FTW! :D Should be here between 11th-16th. Next I'm looking at the monitor I want to get. I have a good number of months before I can afford one but I'm looking heavily into either the XB270HU ($700) or the Predator X34 ($1,300). I don't really know if I need the 34" and the curved display and I think the XB270HU will suffice. Not to mention the price is a difference of $600! I'll most likely end up with the XB270HU unless I can find some really good reason not to. Plus I want to have access to the 144hz without the need to overclock (X34 limited to 60 default with 100 overclock).

You'd be surprised how often interlacing is still used. I still see video game trailers by the largest publishers displaying interlacing artifacts or stutter due to poor quality deinterlacing.
