BenQ XL2546 - 1024 @ 240hz for csGO - blackbars top bottom

Post by destiRS » 14 Jan 2018, 11:46

Dear guys,

before I start: Thanks for your nice support inside this forum. I'm following and reading here since years.

Now to the topic: I recently bought BenQ XL2546 to play csGO at native 240hz. Normally I play with 1024*768 inside csGO to get the best performance (fps etc.). This is what I don't want to change. Inside the monitor menu I can see under "System -> Information" the "CurrentResolution" and the "OptimumResolution". Optimum will ever stay on 1920*1080*240hz, that's correct. When Im working on my desktop CurrentResolution is 1920*1080*240. This is also fine. When I join csGO CurrentResolution is shown with 1280*1024*240hz, but my ingame Resolution is set to 1024*768. Im playing with blackbars on the left and right, but with this new monitor I also have blackbars at the top and bottom.

Is it possible that I can get 1024*768*240 without blackbars at top and bottom? And monitor should also show CurrentResolution: 1024*768*240, when im playing csGO.

By the way: Monitor is plugged in with delivered DP2.0 cable at my GTX980.

Kind regards
Raphael

Enable GPU scaling in the nvidia panel. Then select "full screen" as the scaling option.

I tried the following inside nvidia panel:
set scaling to "GPU" + "aspect ratio" = CurrenResoultion says: 1920*1080@240
set scaling to "GPU" + "full screen" = CurrenResoultion says: 1920*1080@240
set scaling to "GPU" + "no scaling" = CurrenResoultion says: 1920*1080@240
set scaling to "DISPLAY" + "aspect ratio" = CurrenResoultion says: 1280*1024@241
set scaling to "DISPLAY" + "full screen" = CurrenResoultion says: 1280*1024@241
set scaling to ""DISPLAY" + "no scaling" = CurrenResoultion says: 1280*1024@241

Hmm, any other ideas?

What do you mean? GPU scaling will scale 1024x768 to 1920x1080 fullscreen. The monitor OSD will report 1920x1080, which means it's working as intended.

What else would you want?

I thought, that I will get with some setting CurrentResolution to 1024*768@240 inside OSD.

You don't need that. All you need is the game running at 1024x768. The GPU scales that to 1920x1080 and sends it to the monitor.

It's EXACTLY what you want.

If this follows the same pattern as the Benq XL2720Z and older Z series monitors, there are "problems" getting scaling to work properly at the highest refresh rate, due to reduced vertical totals. I'm almost sure you can not use the monitor OSD to use any sort of scaling at 240hz (in the older monitors case, 144hz). Whether the Nvidia drivers will allow this with a custom resolution is anyone's guess. At native resolution, there were some tricks like using -1 pixels for vertical (like 1920x1079), but I can't help with this ;(

So because of this bug, I need a custom resolution?

I'm starting to lose it here, slowly but surely.

I posted the solution. What is it that you want?

(Forum rules says "Be nice to newbies")

It's not necessarily a bug.

What OSD says does not always match the resolution that is actually being used.

If GPU is scaling it, it just means the resolution 1024x768 is being converted to 1920x1080 before it's sent to the monitor. The monitor only see 1920x1080 even though it's a 1024x768 stretched to fill 1920x1080. Because the signal is already scaled (GPU scaled before it is sent to the display), there's is no way for the monitor to know it's only 1024x768 even though it's really 1024x768. Sometimes certain numbers will show up like 1280x1024 in the OSD, even though the game is really 1024x768. Don't worry about the OSD reoslution as long as CS:GO is setup correctly.

Ignore the number that the OSD says. Worry about what Windows says + how big the image is + what the reoslution looks like (looks low like 1024x768). Getting the correct scaling can be tricky to do sometimes, as monitors can behave different when the monitor is doing the scaling instead of GPU.

Also, if you are playing on a GTX1080. Ti, doing 1920x1080 is not more laggy than 1024x768 like it used to be on older cards. In some cases, it's much simpler to stick to 1920x1080. I'm not sure if this is the case for you on a GTX 980 but the old advice of sticking to 1024x768 is becoming less useful nowadays if your GPU is fast.
