Looking for the best 1080p monitor for gaming?

Post by BavidDrent » 13 Mar 2018, 14:35

I will pretty much only be using it for gaming. I don't watch movies or do any colour work.

I play Overwatch, LoL and Fortnight. I have a 1080ti & 8700k.

Looking for a 24" monitor with 144hz-240hz refresh rates that also looks great. I much prefer 24" to 27" for gaming, so that's why I'm not looking at a 27"!

I don't have a set budget at all, I just want something great :)

Thanks!

Hello,

For a GTX 1080 Ti user who has no budget restrictions -- the current best 1080p monitors available on the market for motion fluidity and input lag (at 240Hz, if playing PC only, not consoles) tends to be the 240Hz GSYNC monitors at the moment.

These are the 240 Hz 1080p GSYNC panels currently available on the market:

Acer Predator XB272 - 27" 1920x1080 TN 240Hz G-SYNC
Acer Predator XB252Q - 24.5" 1920x1080 TN 240Hz G-SYNC
ASUS ROG PG258Q - 24.5" 1920x1080 TN 240Hz G-SYNC
Dell Alienware AW2518H - 24.5" 1920x1080 TN 240Hz G-SYNC

While these are TN panels, the color quality of these units are improved compared to early "LightBoost" 144Hz monitors, both in strobed and non-strobed modes.

You're interested only in PC gaming, right? Keep in mind, what's good for PC (240Hz) may not be ideal for consoles (60Hz). Some 240Hz monitors today don't have the lowest-lag 60Hz modes. I have recently discovered that some of them apparently buffer slow-scanning 60Hz frames and then scan-them out in 1/240sec -- so while no additional input lag is added for 240Hz, some input lag is added for 60Hz console gaming to buffer slowscanning signals for the fastscan-only panels.

I can vouch for the "Dell Alienware AW2518H" as I've tested the freesync variant (AW2518Hf) and found it to be a pretty substantial step up from my Benq xl2411z.
(I don't think there is much difference between the g-sync and freesync variant in this case, but I haven't seen the former in person.)

Anyway, you can check out my thread on the monitor:

Gone from which store?
A huge number of Amazon sellers are selling it.

I wonder if it's worth picking up freesync over gsync and save some money. The tearing is still visible even at 240hz but gsync also helps with other problems.
If op want freesync, then even lg 24gm79g should be a good option?... a bit better reported picture quality than 240hz monitors but 1080ti would easily do 240fps in overwatch that OP plays

If you have an nvidia GPU, it's kind of sad to get 240Hz without gsync. It's really, really good guys. It's like having a 7.1 surround setup and then buying a BluRay player with only stereo output.

That's true. Sadly all 1080p gsync montiors are 240hz and what comes with that is some blb troubles and so on. Or maybe that just comes with all monitors these days. Pg248Q is only 1080p 144hz gsync moniotr worth a look but it's old and even odler looking.
I will probably order Either Alieware AW2518H, Asus PG258Q, Acer XB252Q or XB272... all very similarly priced.
Also -I've got answer from one of official Dell retailers here. They wrote to dell and got answer that there is no stock for AW2518H and won't be anytime soon. That makes me wodner if it's true and what are they planning in EMEA territory. I still found it somewhere but it's some shady online store :P
