AW2518HF thoughts?

Post by Gametheory » 01 Apr 2018, 15:34

Background Info:
i7-4790k
EVGA GTX 970 SSC
Dell 2209WA IPS @ 75hz

I've had my monitor for about 10 years. It's treated me well and I plan to keep it as the secondary.
Despite that monitor being a dinosaur, I do love smoothness and color (too bad there's no 24" IPS 144hz), but since I have an IPS already, going a gaming TN would be the optimal compliment for my uses.

I've been reading a bunch of threads regarding 240hz and from what I can understand, there's an overall gain with going 240hz.

My understanding from reading threads in this forum:

a. Gsync overall benefits the build even while it's off.
b. Lower latency on a 240hz monitor @100fps vs a 144hz monitor @ 100fps.
c. With 240hz @ 240fps being the most optimal.
d. Faster scanning would still benefit me even at low fps.
e. Gsync would benefit me most since I have a GTX 970

Of course I won't be reaching anywhere near 200fps in current AAA games with my build.

However it does seem I'm in a spot where it's more advantageous for me to jump to 240hz instead of going to 144hz then to 240hz if I ever wanted to. I don't want to spend the extra $150 on the AW2518H as it's way over my budget.

So here are my questions:

1. Are my perceptions correct? (I feel like I'm not grasping some of the info)
2. No GSYNC and ULMB a huge loss for me?
3. Thoughts on going for the Viewsonic 2402 144hz at $259 for $73 less?

More fps is always more optimal, 1,000 > 240. It will reduce input latency, stuttering and visible tearing. pretty much everything else is right.

Idk, maybe. A lot of monitors having weird settings and calibrations that will mess with the monitor one way or another, such as bad colors, bad overdrive, frame skipping, imo the whole thing is a mess. G-Sync just makes sure that the configurations are not as messed up.

Also adaptive sync tech imo should be a requirement for pretty much every monitor.

But if it's over your budget idk why you're asking. The Viewsonic 2402 is probably fine and a good price.

GSYNC gives you a 50% multiplier factor in how nice a specific framerate looks -- e.g. a GSYNC 80fps looks better than non-GSYNC 110fps.

Given the cryptocurrency mining premiums on graphics cards right now, the $150 difference is much cheaper than the graphics card upgrade. In your case, I'd suggest paying the GSYNC premium to make the monitor last longer. GSYNC 'feels' like a graphics card upgrade in ways even if you only run at 100 frames per second.

You could go for an IPS 1440p GSYNC display, but those are more expensive than the Dell AW2518H 240Hz monitor.

Thank you for the replies, it helps a bunch.

Yea I just wanted to know how much I'd lose out by going Freesync.
I probably otherwise shouldn't have mentioned it being out of my budget.

I do play CSGO, OVERWATCH and have relatively fast reaction times.

So the lower latency is very appealing.

I may just end up with the 240hz freesync as it's better to have 240hz than not.
