What's the absolute best monitor for competitive FPS to get?

Post by Scribblex » 19 Apr 2018, 01:59

I'm looking for the absolute best monitor you can get at this point in time. Gsync or freesync, 144hz or 240hz doesn't matter. What would be the absolute best monitor for competitive fps gaming. Doesn't matter if it has bad colors or any of that stuff if you have even a slight advantage over other players. I have a 1080ti and 6700k and already have a monitor for movies and single player games (PG279Q). Playing mostly PUBG very competitive.

There are several considerations:
-- Blur Reduction or not; this can help certain gaming tactics but it can add lag. Sometimes it helps more than hurts, but depends on gaming tactic where your eyes moves around a lot.
-- Variable Refresh Rate or not; some competitive players use this in certain games. CS:GO does not benefit much as say, PUBG from variable refresh rate due to CS:GO ability to run above refresh rates. They tend to help games that feel like a chore in aiming due to stutters.
-- Absolute Lowest Lag; certain gaming tactics demand the absolute lowest lag even at loss of other features (e.g. stare-stationary-at-crosshairs tactics), like turning off VRR and ULMB
-- Console versus PC versus both; Most 240Hz monitors aren't very good at 60Hz lag. A monitor can be world's lowest lag only at specific refresh rates. If you need both Console eSports *and* PC eSports in one monitor, then you'll probably want to steer towards specific well-rated 144Hz monitors
-- Image quality; Some of us are more bothered by specific kinds of image artifacts than others, such as specific kinds of TN or ghosting artifacts found on specific types of panels. For some, the image quality of 240Hz TN is unplayable, while others don't mind at all and love the performance.

It's all in the right tool for the right job. No easy single answer, but generally, 240Hz monitors have gotten generally favourable reviews by most competitive gamers. There are exceptions though as some have noted, but the reviews are generally more positive than not.

Due to these considerations, it's quite possible that the best monitor for PUBG can actually be slightly different than the best monitor for CS:GO, and different than the best monitor for XB1/PS4 competitive gaming.

With a 1080Ti, and not as worried about image quality, you would probably steer more towards a monitor of maximum flexibility, the ability to turn on/off VRR and blur reduction --- so a G-SYNC 240Hz monitor may be what you want even if you don't always use G-SYNC in every single game, and if you only use ULMB only in your fast-panning crosshairsless games, etc. If you play only CS:GO you might not care much about VRR technologies since CS:GO consistently runs at very high frame rates often exceeding max Hz. But if it's cost-no-object flexibility, then 240Hz GSYNC monitors are your best bet for your 1080 Ti card. These tend to perform within a couple of milliseconds of each other during the 240Hz mode (at least when tested within the same lag-test website using the same lag tester).

So in your opinion I should turn on my gync at all times while playing PUBG? It doesn't have any downsides? Also which one of these would take the place as the best?
