240Hz monitor below 240fps

Post by crais » 09 May 2018, 04:42

Hello everyone!
First of all, I'd like to thank you for this amazing forum. I've been an (anonymous) reader for a while now and I got a lot of insights due to this platform.

I own the BenQ XL2546 240Hz monitor as I'm mostly playing CSGO (where I can easily reach 300-500fps). So normally I just play at 240Hz with DyAc set to Premium and AMA on High (I've also tried manually adjusting strobe crosstalk at 182Hz, but tbh I don't see much difference as the crosstalk in the center of the image is minimal and I can't really tell a difference).

However, I'm wondering about the best solution when playing games where my system can't achieve constant 240+ fps (e.g. PUBG, Fortnite,...). In theory, is it "better" to lower the refresh rate to a value that is below the average frame rate or should I just keep it at 182/240Hz? I've tried this ingame but it is really hard to assess what is better or even to tell a difference.

Furthermore, I've tried to lower my settings in said games to achieve a constant 240+ frame rate but this is only possible by reducing the resolution. Thus, I've created custom resolutions (with CRU) but I'm unsure about the proper timings/totals. How can one find suitable values for manual settings? Or is it preferable to use LCD standard/native/reduced? e.g. for 1600x900@182hz, 1600x900@240hz, 1440x1080@240hz (stretched via DisplayScaling if possible?) ?

Greetings and thanks in advance! :)

From what i understand, if you have 240Hz monitor you should always use 240Hz for all your games, regardless of the framerate. You will benefit from faster scanout and lower input lag, including much tighter min/avg/max input lag values. Also, it looks like 240Hz monitors are more tuned to provide you with best performance when 240Hz is being used, but they are lacking (at least some of them) in 60Hz/120Hz (and other) modes when compared to monitors that natively support these lower hz modes. So in reality your 144Hz mode on your 240Hz monitor might be slower than 144Hz mode on 144Hz monitor (where 144Hz is its max).
