ASUS VG278Q 144Hz mode stuttering

Post by RefleXx » 01 Jun 2018, 15:19

Hello Blurbusters community, I have a very strange issue. Using my ASUS VG278Q on 144 Hz doesn't feel smooth both while gaming and in Windows because of a strange stuttering. When I switch it to 120 Hz (in Windows adapter settings) everything works fine, even 100 Hz feels way smoother than 144 Hz. I also noticed that running 60-144fps content on 144hz mode feels way less smooth than on 120Hz.
The monitor is connected with Displayport to my R9 280x.
What I already tried:
-I updated all kinds of drivers
-I used another Pc with the monitor and had the same Issue (so I assume it's an Issue caused by the monitor itself).
-I enabled and disabled all kind of OSD Settings like FreeSync, ELMB... and I made a factory reset.
-I tried switching to DVI an I tried switching the other Dp of my GPU.
-I unplugged power and restarted several times.

Can anybody help me with this issue or has any idea what causes it? I am running out of Ideas.

here I uploaded some footage:

Very strange!
Are you running it in single monitor mode?

Have you been messing around with custom resolutions and settings in NVCP or CRU? because bad settings can cause frame skipping. you could MAYBE adjust the timings in NVCP to fix the issue.

But mainly you plugged it into another computer and it still skipped? Sorry mate, you might have a pooped monitor.

Actually I did mess around with CRU, but I only made some minor changes like a costume Resolution for CSGO and I reset everything afterwards. I tried it again on the other system just to make sure it wasn't a placebo effect when I first tried it, but no, it's still lagging. But to be fair, it isn't really a test under the same circumstances. My main Pc has Amd grafics card, the second system has NVIDIDA and is way older and on the low end side. So I will give it a try messing around with timings, but to be honest I dont't know what values I can try. Maybe you can help me out.
These are the default values.

In case it's really a bad panel, I still have warranty. (bought in September 2017)
Thanks for the help so far.

Small update: I tried different refresh rates between 120 and 144Hz (on "LCD standard" CRU timing values) and I found out that the closer I get to 120Hz, the less it stutters. Using the default blurbusters ufo test, on 125Hz the ufo only stutters like every inch it moves (It's like the ufo skips several frames, like a small teleport). On 144 Hz it stutters way more frequently.

Try using "LCD reduced" and also try lowering the Vertical and Horizontal totals.

This is not just a error with the test and your monitor is fine?

Also you did try and use the reset.exe you get with CRU right?

I just tried lcd redued on the lowest totals possible and it didn't work that well. The whole picture was ripped.
No its not just the test, I see it in games and Windows aswell.
Yes I use the reset.exe

Ok I definetly know now it's severe frame skipping. Does anybody know how to fix it?

Hello guys, i created a account because i have the same exact issue than OP. Same Monitor and same issues.

I recevied the monitor today and plugged it on a GTX 970. I disabled Free Sync on the monitor and pushed the refresh rate @144hz. Basically i have a BenQ XL2430T just aside the Asus one... and i instantly noticed the stuttering on the 144Hz mode, the Asus seems to have problems to handle the 144hz smoothly ...

After a lot of tests... unplug, switch to DVI, switch to DP, switch computer (one with an Old 7790HD Radeon), restart, reinstall drivers, try some refresh rate between 144Hz and 120hz, i have exactly the same behaviour than OP ... It's more than Strange at this level...

I'm suspecting something about the monitor itself and not graphic card or cables or anything...

I tried the Asus's DP cable and DVI cable on my BenQ and can't find any problem ... My theory is that the monitor can't really handle 144hz ... if someone have an idea we'll apreciate it :D

I made exactly the same tests than OP, i'm also on "Single monitor mode"...
