30 fps @ 30 hz blur reduced?

Post by mdzapeer » 08 Mar 2014, 16:31

Hi, was wondering, since fps=refresh gives the most clear motion. Would a 30 hz display @ 30 fps be blur reduced?

Depends.
If you're using non-strobed 30Hz, then no.
If you're using strobed 30Hz, then yes.

Non-strobed situation
For non-strobed, 30fps@30Hz looks the same as 30fps@60Hz or 30fps@120Hz since a flickerfree monitor just redisplays the same frame. On non-strobed LCD's, there's no visual difference between duplicate refreshes being repeated -- or one continuously, longer displayed refreshes covering the same time period. Thus, there is no benefit to doing 30Hz instead of 60Hz.

Strobed situation
Yes, you get correct motion blur elimination at one flash per refresh, at framerate = refreshrate = stroberate
However, 30Hz strobe flicker is extremely painful/uncomfortable to look at for long periods.

For strobing to reduce motion blur comfortably, you want flicker rates above your flicker fusion threshold. Generally, 85Hz and up.
For current motion blur reducing backights in computer monitors (including LightBoost clones), found in the 120Hz Monitor List:
NVIDIA LightBoost -- 100Hz and 120Hz
NVIDIA ULMB -- 85Hz, 100Hz and 120Hz
EIZO Turbo240 -- 105Hz through 122Hz (via ToastyX)
BENQ Blur Reduction* -- 60Hz through 120Hz (via Blur Busters Strobe Utility, combined with ToastyX CRU)

(*Note: For the BENQ method instead of NVIDIA/EIZO method, you need Z-Series monitor that is compatible with Blur Busters Strobe Utility)
