I've been using a DVI cable along with a minijack for sound on my Asus ve248qe monitor, which have been working fine. But I would like to only have 1 small cable for both sound and picture, and found a displayport cable. When I plug it in it will only give me the option to choose max. 85hz @ 1920 x 1080 resolution. My monitor is able to do 144hz, but 120hz would be just fine.
Do I need to get another cable or am I missing something in regards to setting up the catalyst control panel etc.
Should mention that my graphicscard is an Asus R9280X.
Displayport with ve248qe will only give 85hz

Yes -- try a new cable.
See this thread: http://forums.blurbusters.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=371 -- It was solved by trying a different cable.

Probably a typo. There's no such thing as a VE248QE, although there's a VE248Q.SS4 wrote:btw, whats the difference between the vg248qe and ve248qe?
Since VE248Q's are not rated for 85Hz, I'm fully assuming OP is asking about a VG248QE -- the only one capable of "Better Than 60Hz"
VG248QE -- 144Hz
VE248Q -- 60Hz
VE248QE -- doesn't exist
