240 HZ FOR OVERWATCH, HELP ME DECIDE!

Post by Colt3d » 13 Sep 2018, 16:58

Hello, I decided to pull the trigger on one of these type of monitors to play overwatch but after some research Ive found there are many popular 240 HZ monitors around:

1. ASUS ROG Swift PG258Q
2. BenQ ZOWIE 24.5 XL2540
3. BenQ ZOWIE 24.5 XL2546
4. Acer Predator XB252Q
5. ViewSonic XG2530

I feel a bit lost on which one suits the most and Im afraid paying extra for features I dont actually need (hard to tell what they are selling you these days), my goal is simply to play overwatch at 300 fps with as low input latency as possible and as responsive gaming as possible, I dont really care much about color fidelity.

I have a Ryzen 7 (8 cores overclocked to 4.1 ghz) and an NVIDIA GTX 1080 Founders edition, prolly will upgrade either CPU or Card as well if necessary to achieve my performance goal.

Can some one throw me some tips on how to select a good 240 Hz monitor for me?

Benq XL2546 probably is the sweet spot among these, since you barely want a Gsync if you want to play competitively with as much responsiveness as possible.

Ryzens in my experience do not guarantee stable 300fps in Overwatch, specifically if you're capturing/recording/streaming and play on some higher levels. My 7700K @ 5000 also do not guarantee 300fps, there are drops to ~250 in heavy 6v6 fights with much ults used, so does and overclocked 8700k. Probably next-gen CPUs could provide full 300fps experience in all ingame cases.
Anyway your CPU should be able to provide average of 240+fps so you generally should be fine with it.

I would imagine an RTX 2080 should guarantee 300 fps but apparently people are getting lower fps with a 1080 ti so who knows.

When playing framerates beyond refreshrate, then VRR usually doesn't matter.

GSYNC doesn't mean anything bad, I've seen some GSYNC monitors get better numbers in non-GSYNC mode than a FreeSync monitor in non-FreeSync mode. I've also seen vice-versa happen (in the past, before FreeSync was optimized, GSYNC often consistently had less lag...).

You may be paying a premium but if you're prioritizing all those milliseconds then you're really looking at the raw lag benchmarks, not caring if the monitor has VRR or not since VRR can simply be turned off for the competition-critical situations.

That said, if you do play *anything* else than Overwatch, you may still be intersted in VRR. The use of VRR can actually competitively help aiming in certain stuttery/laggy games, and VRR can be turned on/off. But if you're only playing 300fps+ VSYNC OFF in CS:GO then the VRR tech won't matter to you as much.

If you've never seen VRR there are demo animations at http://www.testufo.com/vrr .... you might later encounter a future game that fluctuates wildly 80fps-200fps and find that turning on VRR helps that particular game, since smoothed-out 100fps VRR can look smoother than random 110fps-150fps fluctuating unsynchronized. Unless you're only sticking to older high-framerate games for their smoothness. The extremely high VRR cap of 240Hz monitors means the lag penalty of VRR is almost negligible, as seen in GSYNC 101 -- and may be a useful tool to have lying around (the right tool for the right game).

I know people who prefer VSYNC OFF for CS:GO, prefer VRR for PUBG, and prefer ULMB for Rocket League, because of the various pros/cons of using specific modes for specific games.

Yes, also definitely consider the XL2546 as one of the candidates too as well.

It's a personal choice what is important for you.

Damn, that was a very insightful response thank you Chief!

Before your reply and after doing some late night research in your website yesterday I realized ultimately that for Overwatch I cared about reducing motion blur way more than achieving the absolute lowest input latency (as long as theres only a slight latency cost), currently I play at 250+/300+ frames (framerate varies those 50 frame range) at 1080p resolution and at 120 hz refresh rate with a strobed (Lightboost) Asus VG248QE / VSYNC OFF, with this setup the little martians at 120 hz have been always crystal clear to me already (so much I can easily count the white dots on the bottom of the ship) so as long as its a net upgrade from my current gear I got really attracted to the idea of going for a 1080p 240hz BENQ Zowie monitor and using the newest version of BENQ Blur Reduction software which seemed to have lots of options for me to control and tweak the blur reduction just right.

Because of that ordering the XL2540 made a lot of sense to me, the XL2546 with Dyac was my second option but I couldnt really find a tangible information on what it has to offer compared to the XL2540 so it has boiled down to Freesync+ BenQ Blur reduction VS Dyac for me.

Any last pointers on BenQBlur vs Dyac? should I change my XL2540 order to a XL2546?
Given the information above did I make a good choice? (theres still time LOL)

thanks in advance for your reply, I have been learning lots from you and this website.

Overwatch on modern PCs is CPU bound, not GPU bound. Even my GTX 1070 is 70-90% GPU saturated while providing 300 avg fps according to Fraps (in quick plays or so).
You can see by yourself some dots after the ingame FPS counter. Game shows yourself as more CPU bound, at least if you are competitive-like player with low graphics settings.

You may also want to try 27inch/1080p if you havent yet.

Flicks are harder on 27".

Only for those who havent yet used to 27". And there are other aspects of aiming and gaming, so there's no universal rule and 27" worth trying, if user havent tried it yet.

All I can say is that my experience of a 240hz AG251FZ has been briliant (not that I would advise people to be buying that monitor, I'm sure there is better stuff available now). I used to have the original prototype 144hz asus gsync monitor, and it was great. But I'd much rather run in 240hz mode with nosync (even though the AG251FZ is a freesync monitor, I own an nvidia card). There isn't really any need for any kind of sync on this high a refresh rate. It's very difficult to see tearing on 240hz, unless you're playing a 2D sidescrolling game or something. I never bought the monitor for the higher frame rate it's capable of displaying, only for the faster scan in nosync mode
