144hz monitor with NO scanlines?

Post by Zheoni » 25 Oct 2018, 12:34

Hi!
Recently I have bought and returned 2 different monitors (Benq Zowie 2411p and Asus PG248Q). Both have the issue of scan lines when configured at more then 120hz. Previously I had a 2411z that didnt had this issue, but now I need a displayport input. Even worse, my PG248Q had colder colos at the bottom and warmer a the top.

SO Is there a "safe" 144hz monitor?. Sould I ask for another PG248Q to see if I have more luck? (I really liked that one if it would have no problems)

Thank you :D

The 240Hz monitors in my experience, does not get the scanline artifact. The artifact shows up when a panel is being pushed close to its limits -- it is related to increase voltage imbalances in LCD inversion at faster refresh, and is amplified during strobed operation modes.

Also the 1440p 144Hz LCD panels seem to not get the scanlines issue, if you're wanting to use one of those. (That said scanlines might appear when overclocking to 165Hz..)

Are you preferring to stay 144Hz or are you interested in going 240Hz?

Also, for blur reduction -- do you use blur reduction? -- 240Hz monitors doing 144Hz strobing generally can achieve better strobe quality (and lack of scanlines issue) than 144Hz monitors doing 120Hz strobing.

144 is my minimum, I dont mind going higher. I dont use blur reduction, it's fine for me as it is now. My problem is with those issues, scanlines and uneven colors around the monitor.

The things I'm looking for are: >=144hz, 24", >=1080p, nice colors and low response time.

Do you recomend me going to 1440p at 24"? Won't the things be too small?

With TN panels, there's no guarantee the panel will not have visible inversion artefacts. It seems to vary a lot between different TN monitors. Some don't have issues, others do.

As for 24" 1440p, it will require DPI scaling in Windows. If you don't mind going higher, 27" 1440p is a very nice sweet spot. This size is popular with IPS panels, which have vastly reduced pixel inversion related artefacts (like "scanlines".) Asus has announced a new 165Hz G-Sync 1440p IPS panel, the PG279QZ:

No idea what the release date is. However, it might be too expensive (I'd say it's guaranteed it will cost upwards of $700.)

What's your GPU though? With a 1070 or 980Ti, 1440p is nice. With anything below that, 1080p is recommended.

For me, 27" is probably too much, but if it's the only way to have all those things, I can try.
My max budget is $500.

So, I have 3 options: getting another asus pg248q praying for the panel lottery, a 24" 1440p using a little of dpi scaling, or a 27" 1440p.

As for my PC, there is no problem.

The Dell S2716DG (or Dell S2716DGR, same thing) would be a good option. 144Hz. Still TN so no absolute guarantees about scanlines, but it doesn't seem to pop-up in discussions about scanlines. It's a very well reviewed monitor. It's g-sync.

Its smaller 24" brother is the S2417DG, which is also well reviewed. It's 165Hz.

Note that even though 24" 1440p has "4K-like" pixel density and thus you need DPI scaling, it also means a much sharper image in games, and as a result also better perceived colors. Also note that this is still true to some extent for 27" 1440p, which is still a higher DPI than 1080p 24".

So just choose your preferred display size. I personally prefer 27" (having jumped from 23" a while back.) But that's of course personal preference. I like playing games on a larger display, while for desktop use I just push the display further back my desk.
