27" 1080p looks OK to my eyes for games.

I do notice pixels when I look close. But it's not too bad in games. It's more noticeable on the desktop.

Because it's harder to notice pixels since they're smaller. Also, TN panels don't have good viewing angles, and so a smaller monitor has better colors at the edges. However, with a 27" monitor, you can just move the monitor further away to fix the issue. It's only a big issue when sitting very close to the monitor.

In my humble opinion -- (for the majority of people like you) -- you won't have problems with pixels. They don't turn from sandgrains into the size of sugarcubes. It's actually only roughly a 10% increase in pixel size (or about 25% in pixel areage). There certainly is a difference, but it is useful to know the relative size increase.

Many of us view 65cm from a 24" monitor or 27" monitor, so should be fine. It's a matter of a viewing distance, 27" away from 27", 24" away from 24" -- a monitor that is bigger can be pushed away a bit, especially if your vision is farsighted, this can be easier on the eyes. Many people buy 24" because of eSports and desktop sizes. 1080p versus 1440p is a bigger difference than 24" versus 27". 27" 1440p actually has higher pixel density than 24" 1080p, for example, since ratio 1440-vs-1080 is a bigger ratio than 27-vs-24.

65 points = 65 centimeters? inches? I'm not familiar with your country's terminology on "points". I'm familiar with metric & I'm familiar with quid (pounds) but I'm not sure about points. But I'll go with the closest, 65cm is actually a pretty good recommendation.

Even a TN 27" 1080p (biggest pixel, lowest rez, larger 27 inch) probably will still make you and your son happy from my feeling. I'm assuming that your son's existing monitor is not already a 1440p.

Some of us are more picky and others are less picky. My feeling is you will probably be less picky than many of us -- I sense a fear of purchasing because you're worried about dissapointing your son, rather than the (to most non-BlurBusters-regulars) the relative minor differences between TN-vs-IPS, 27-vs-24. You will find that Blur Busters Forums users are a relatively picky lot.

The pixels are much less noticeable in games than in Windows desktop, especially since the RTX 2070/2080 is actually powerful enough to enable AA modes with little performance impact. This greatly reduces the visibility of pixels too.

The prices vary a lot, but the VG278Q that you mentioned is one of the monitors that are within your price range. That one would be a suitable choice meeting that spec.

There are several 27" 1080p in the Official List of FreeSync monitors. Since you are currently very price-conscious, and you are buying for someone else, there is really no use nor any importance, in the splitting-hairs of telling you which one is 1% better or worse. I suggest going ahead to purchase the VG278Q which will still be quite an upgrade for your son's gaming experience.
