ViewSonic XG2402 vs ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278Q

Post by ogchampion » 21 Mar 2019, 07:36

Hi, new to blur busters but have been doing a lot of reading over the last few weeks.

I have been using a PG278Q for the last 18 months for competitive FPS, mainly PUBG and now Apex Legends.

On the strength of Notty_PT's very positive feedback I have ordered an XG2402 to compare with my PG278Q. :D

Obviously there's the 1440p vs 1080p & gsync/freesync difference but I'm hoping to gain a competitive edge with the ViewSonic in terms of raw input/response performance.

Can a modern/mature 144hz 1080p panel like the XG2402 offer a performance advantage over an ageing 1440p 144hz panel like my PG278Q?

Would be particularly interested in hearing from Notty_PT regards XG2402 monitor settings (rampage response setting etc) for FPS games. 8-)

I'm running a 1080 Ti and Ryzen 1600 @ 3.9ghz for reference.

Thanks in advance

Interesting choice. You already have a premium 144 hz monitor and still you bought another 144hz monitor because someone said so?I hope you find the performance you hope for.I am very curious really. :D

The fact you already have the PG27 is great because you will be able to compare it side by side with the xg2402 wich is the perfect scenario!

From the xg2402 you can expect extremely good overdrive/response time! Best in the industry and you will notice it even by scrolling on websites. I use rampage at fast, but only on thr most extreme preset you can notice overshoot. I can already assure you that on "fast" it beats every monitor I ever tried, and you will see a massive difference compared to your current ips model.

Also this monitor is perfect with gsync adding only a tiny amount of input lag when you activate it.

We can talk about the ugly bezels on the xg2402 as the main drawback, but thats about it. The monitor is amazing.

Dont forget to cap fps to 138 for optimal motion clarity (less obviois tearing). It also suits your cpu well because ryzen 5 1600 wouldnt be able to push really high fps anyway.

If you ask me if you did an upgrade or not, I would say yes. Sure you downgraded the resolution and screen size, but the motion clarity will be obviously better and you will notice it.

On a side not, at 138fps 1080p your gtx 1080ti (same as mine) will be almost idle! I mean, I use 50% power limit + downclock on almost every game apart from battlefield. Is good to save power and noise :)

I also bought the XG2402 following the recommendation and I am comparing it against a Dell S2716DG.

The Viewsonic is better in every way apart from resolution. The response, colours and motion clarity are brilliant. I can feel the quickness in game.

My only problem is that it's 1080p. In games like Apex Legends I find the additional resolution to be superior in many situations. I have a 2080Ti with a 6700k @ 4.7Ghz so I do have enough power to drive games at 144fps @ 1440p.

I used to think my Dell was very decent but Viewsonic really shows it up. If there is a 1440p monitor out there with similar quality I would be interested to know.

I'm going to spend another few days trying out the 1080p to see if I can live with it. My primary motivation is to get the maximum competitive advantage, everything else is secondary.

I do agree that on Battle Royale games, resolution > refresh rate. There are very very long distance engagements on BR games. Higher resolution allows you to see faster and position better, and that is a massive advantage. BR is not only aim based, it has a lot of tactical aspects and decisions into the mix.

Dell S2716DG is still an amazing monitor, I can understand why you are still debating between them. ViewSonic will serve you better for arena based/small maps shooters like Call of Duty or Quake, where aim and reactions are major.

A 1440p screen benefits Battle Royale players imo, the increased PPI is very important for visibility.

By the way are you able to maintain a solid 144fps with the 2080ti on Apex at all times?

Ok time for a quick update.

Thanks to Notty_PT and everyone else for your input so far.

So I spent time this weekend comparing the XG2402 and PG278Q side by side with UFO pursuit camera and playing Apex extensively on each.

Initial thoughts are XG2402 does indeed have better motion blur control. The clarity difference in UFO pursuit camera is subtle, but it is objectively better than the PG278Q to my eyes.

I noticed this more obviously during intense Apex Legends sessions. It was simply easier to keep my crosshairs on enemies when using the XG2402. The clarity is superb. For comparison, with the PG278Q I found it more difficult to keep my crosshairs on fast moving enemies. I would 'lose' them quicker in the perceived motion blur.

Other observations from testing this weekend;
  • My 1080 Ti & Ryzen 1600 @ 3.9 Ghz are not quite enough to hold 140fps constant at 1440p. Not sure if this is a GPU or CPU bottleneck.

1440p obviously yields much more detail in game and that is a tangible advantage in Battle Royale.

1080p is much easier to drive at constant 140fps of course. I felt this was beneficial for aim.

XG2402 rampage response is set to 'fast'. Although Rtings review suggests 'faster' is the best overdrive setting, so I'll do some more testing on that.
Notty_PT, I am currently using a 138fps cap with NVCP V-Sync set to on. In game V-sync disabled. Is this what you recommend for Apex?

Thanks in advance
