165hz vs 144hz xb271hu question

Post by GFresha » 24 Mar 2019, 22:44

Read somewhere that pushing high refresh rates on IPS panels starts causing some ghosting/smudge effect. I think I am noticing this with XB271HU so should I actually keep at 144 hz instead or maybe go even lower to 120hz what you guys recommending?!

I own this monitor. 165Hz on this panel actually does have noticeably worse overdrive/slower GtG transitions than at 144Hz.

TFT Central originally did a review of the PG279Q (uses the same panel as the XB271HU), and they tested 144Hz overdrive vs. 165Hz overdrive on this panel:
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/asu ... erclocking
The response times were slightly slower overall at 165Hz than they had been at 144Hz. The average G2G was now 6.0ms instead of 5.2ms at 144Hz. This translated to a small amount of increased motion blur, but we're talking very very slight. This is arguably offset anyway by the slight improvement in motion clarity brought about by the higher frame rate / higher refresh rate.
Full write-up (with graphs) is in the link above the quote.

I also use an IPS with the same panel (XG2703-GS) and 144Hz is perfect. You don't need to go to 120Hz. The observed G2G issues only happen at 165Hz, and even then, it's perfectly fine.

I mostly use 144Hz though, because 99% of the time I play games that don't benefit from 165Hz (I use g-sync with a 120FPS cap or below usually, since that's already perfect for me with non-competitive, single player games.)

For games that do benefit from 165Hz (CS:GO, Quake 3/Live, etc) 165Hz is fine. I use it for CS:GO.

I'm using the TN version, and have been running her at 144hz (capped @140) due to the somewhat worse performance at 165hz ive read about. But im wondering whether the TN version actually suffers from this? Or is this an IPS-only limitation? Tried googling but very limited information out there on the TN version unfortunately.
