Lowest input delay 240hz monitor?

Post by SkyJax » 05 Apr 2019, 16:45

Hey, just a quick question about low latency 240hz monitors.

I need to know which model(s) have the best input delay out of all.

I've heard the Alienware AW2518HF is super quick but I'm not sure about the difference between the freesync version and the g-sync one.
I know the g-sync model has ULMB whereas the freesync one doesn't, but I don't know if that's a huge thing that affects fast paced gameplay.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi, the lowest input lag 240hz monitor is the Asus XG258Q, followed by the XG248Q. Alienware is slower than both, but faster than all the remaining 240hz models, except the MSI oculux wich I never tried so camt comment.

Overall the best 240hz monitor for lowest input lag is XG258Q. XG248q offers very low input lag too, and increased image detail (23,8 inches vs 24,5 inches). But the panel coating is too aggressive so the smear and grainy effect is very noticeable.

Do we know what the delay is like on the AW2518HF at 60hz? I'd like to use it for PC/Console and would like the delay to be 10ms or less not 14.5ms like the Benq 240hz rtings reviewed which is basically in the territory of very fast TVs.

I used to have an AW2518H and liked it a lot of PC use but my major issue with it honestly was the lack of calibration options in the OSD and i know the freesync variant has a more robust OSD for better calibration without resorting to ICC profiles.

I might actually just go with the VG279Q as it has very good performance at 1080p 60hz, and 1080p 144hz for that matter and will look better than any TN around while having slightly weaker response times. Only gripe is 27" 1080p is not the greatest looking, but i could deal.

AlienWare AW2518HF input lag at 60hz is seriously bad. I also play a lot of PS4 and can´t reccomend that monitor for 60hz usage, at all.

XG248Q and XG258Q are both very fast at 60hz.

Asus VG258QR is also very fast at 60hz.

VG258QR seems kind of pointless doesn't it if its just 165hz? I see they advertise 0.5ms but there's also an asterisk there too lol and i'm pretty sure 240hz 1ms is > 165hz 0.5ms. Both would be very clear just 240hz would give you more frames and that little bit more smoothness.

Between the XG248Q and XG258Q it looks like the smaller monitor is the better of the two, newer, supports 240hz strobing and 23.8" is the size monitor i have now and its a good size for 1080p in general. Anyone done some precise measurements on the XG248Q?

The problem with the Asus XG248Q is that the panel coating is so aggressive that it suffers badly from grainy/smearing effect on fast movements, going against the purpose of having 240hz; while the XG258Q doesn´t suffer from that.

If it's that bad i would just take the matte film off like i did on previous VG248QEs that i had. Tremendous uplift in image quality. Also what are the calibration options on the XG248Q? Since it's freesync i assume it has some more options for tweaking than the sparse OSDs of gsync monitors. Does it have gamma controls/darkboost etc, is there an option to adjust hue or saturation for the different colors or are the only things you can really change is RGB brightness and contrast?

You can only change saturation in some modes, wich aren´t the best imo, like sRGB, for example.

You can remove the matte film, but that´s risky and you can end up with both reflections and a damaged screen over time. I know a lot of cases where monitor panel got damaged from removing the film. However if you don´t care about that and are sure about what you´re doing, then it´s fine!

I would just go XG258Q route anyway, saves time and wouldn´t void any warranty
