Watching old games on new monitors

Here's an example. Anyone notice that some sections basically seem unplayable now?

^ I *think* the OP is referring to the sheer darkness of that section of the game.

Games in that era were originally played on CRT monitors (which had much better black levels than you're typical gaming LCD), whereas today, unless you're playing on an OLED, visibility can suffer on modern LCDs in such scenes, especially when playing during the day.

That, and most modern games now seem to avoid such lightless conditions in similar scenarios.

Just a guess though.

If they make remastered version of Thief 2 with better graphics and sharpness,if your monitor gives good brightness,if your monitor has also a gamma setting to increase, you can play all those games without any problem.
My recent monitor has enough brightness and gamma for these games.Try the new survival game "Close to the Sun" for example. It is also a dark game without right settings.I finished it today and now playing Outlast 2 again. It also is another dark game. ;)

The use of NVIDIA Control Panel and AMD Catalyst Control Center can help assist in gamma-boosting old games too.

+1 on the NVIDIA control panel, I've started playing older games A LOT after a couple disappointments with recent titles and did suffer from that as well, as well as from an apparent lack of contrast that turned some games in a bunch of grey blobs with little difference between each other.
