240hz contra 240fps

Post by laurits » 17 Jun 2019, 12:07

Hello
I play cs:go at 240 hz
sometimes my fps drops under 240. My question is if this can cause stuttering or lagg?
If i for example drop down to 200 fps when action is happening, ive had this stuttering issue for a long time but seems like it only happens when i play a custom res called 1600x1200..i just hate the game looks so choppy when playing these low resolutions like 1280x960..
Whats the downsides of running something higher than my monitors native 1920x1080 resolution, except of worse fps?

Depends on the monitor's scaler. Don't run 1600x1200 btw. This will downscale. Run 1440x1080 instead. This is the native 4:3 resolution for 1080p displays. You can force GPU scaling to send a native 1920x1080 image to the display, which bypasses any display scaling lag. Use "keep aspect" ratio in the GPU scaling setting if you want black bars to the right and left.

currently i have scaling done by display, felt like it was the best option when playing 1600x1200 but could be placebo havent tried with gpu scaling while playing a lower resolution, everyone says something different on which one are best...

I don't know. Why do you need 1600x1200? Just use 1440x1080.

1440x1080 has better quality because there's no vertical scaling. Going from a vertical height of 1080 to 1200 is not enough to increase quality. It will just make it worse. To get an actual quality increase from downscaling, you'd have to increase vertical resolution a lot more.

Feels like models move alot faster on 1440x1080 also, dunno why but there must be a difference.
Migth gonna try it again, just feels like a different aspect ratio even tho both are 4:3..

Seems like nobody on the internet know if u can get lagg/stutter from dropping to lower fps than ur monitors HZ :) ? cant find anything about it.

Usually with downscaling you want to have 4 virtual pixels to every 1 actual pixel. So 2x the resolution on each axis. If you have anything other than an integer ratio of virtual to real pixels the virtual pixels will end up overlapping multiple real pixels blurring their colors over them.

You may want to see if the game supports true multisampling aa as that may be a more ideal look with a few tradeoffs.

As far as stutters go yes 200fps will have more stutters than 240fps on a 240hz. Also having a higher graphics workload due to the higher resolution can create a number of issues depending on how the game engine works. Try with gpu scaling as well like realnc says. A monitors scaling will not have the same performance as a high end gpu.

The game has msaa and fxaa. My settings are 8x msaa and everything on low. fxaa off. My monitor is xl2546. And theese are my specs:
MSI Z270 GAMING PRO, ATX, Socket 1151
INTEL Core I7-7700K 4,2GHz LGA1151 8M Cache Boxed CPU
CORSAIR CS Series Modular CS650M - 650 Watt 80 PLUS Gold Certified PSU
MSI GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING X 8G
CORSAIR Corsair Cooling Hydro Series H60 High-performance CPU Cooler LGA1155/1156 /1366 /2011 AM2/AM2+ AM3/AM3+ FM1 compatible
CORSAIR DDR4 2666MHz 32GB Kit 2x16GB Vengeance LPX Black Skylake 1.2V XMP2.0
CORSAIR Graphite Series 500R Mid-Tower ATX PC Case USB 3.0 / 1x IEEE / 2x 120mm fans 1394 4x5.25inch and 6x 3,5 inch Black

Should gpu scaling make it more smooth in any resolution ? because i already tried gpu scaling only when playing 1600x1200 tho, couldnt really notice a difference.-
