What makes 240hz better than 144hz for competitive?

Post by mewthree » 14 Jul 2019, 20:23

The only real benefit you get from monitors is low input lag. If you have lower input lag your aim is going to feel more snappy.
144hz monitors look smooth enough. Although 240hzs add that minimal amount of improvement it's no end all be all. So, what really makes 240s objectively better than 144-hertz monitors.

xg2402 has 4ms input lag which is around the same as 240hz monitors. seeing things a little bit more smooth is that big of a deal?

240hz opens up the possibliity to use trigger timing based aiming. Sweeping and clicking at the right moment. IMO 144hz is not fast enough for this. As well there is variation from monitor to monitor. A good 144hz tn will still compete well with 240hz. If you are in the market I would wait and see if the 0.5ms gtg 240hz show promise. Current 240hz have barely enough pixel response.

idk, my eyes are just sensitive to movement i guess. I can see and feel the difference between a 240 and 144 in game.

From my experience with the 27GK750F, I found 240Hz to be very low persistence without needing to resort to backlight strobing. The low persistence makes tracking really quite easy.

What you refer to, is a comparasion between xg2402 and laggy 240hz models. If you try a proper low lag 240hz model like Asus XG258Q, you will be amazed at its ultra low input lag and any other model will seem really slow. Thats what happened to me. I also dismissed every 240hz monitor, until I tried Asus XG258Q.

I sold all my 144hz and 240hz models after that, and I know it will be difficult for a company to ever beat such a low input lag monitor, so I'm set. When its price drops or in 2nd hand market I will buy 1 or 2 more just to make sure I never lose this monitor ever.

With that being said, it still suffers from overdrive problems that all 24,5 AUO panels do, so it´s a matter of what you look for on a monitor. On 240hz I look for the lowest possible input lag for better aim.

Another great advantage of 240hz is the fact you can unlock framerates until 235/236 and still enjoy a smooth image, as the monitor has enough refresh rate for it. On a 144hz monitor, if you use 200fps, you will notice a bit of stuttery image with flaws, not smooth.

Interesting. Will you be trying new 0.5ms/0.3ms AUO panels ? I am still using PG278Q and thinking of skipping 240Hz monitors entirely and make a change when ~480Hz panels will be available. TFTcentral already has Acer Nitro XF252Q (0.3ms G2G) and review should be up soon.

I´m not, because so far none of those "new" monitors shown better overdrive/lower response time than the 1ms counterparts. Plus the Asus XG258Q is 0,5ms rated aswell as you can see here: https://www.asus.com/us/ROG-Republic-Of ... fications/

Imo is all marketing, because it is´t any faster than the other 1ms modes, in fact every 240hz monitor overdrive is worse than some great 144hz models like viewsonic XG2402, XG240R or LG 24GL600.

Plus, the reviews on Gigabyte 0,5ms model shown high input lag and very bad overdrive: https://nl.hardware.info/artikel/9309/g ... n-inputlag

I don´t feel the motivation to try any other 240hz models, until some review clearly states certain model has a really low world record latency and an amazing overdrive. Because I doubt any of the other monitors beats XG258Q low input lag.

If I never tried Asus XG258Q or if its input lag wasn´t as low, I would never use 240hz monitors, even after trying more than 10. In fact I made a thread about that matter some time ago, and I was using 144hz only because 240hz was not worth it to me or my aim: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4914

Marketing, I´m 99,99999% sure :D

Just like the other brands announcing 0,5ms or 0,3ms, all using same Panel, new model/bezels and "0,5ms"!

I overclocked my BenQ to 215hz from 144hz this weekend, and I am amazed at the results. In Overwatch for 1 character, Pharah, which uses basically the rocket launcher from Quake 3, my normally accuracy was about 43%. After overclocking I have been consistently in the 50s during a weekend of play. So for me there is a huge difference. This will definitely hold me over until the next gen 240hz panel/monitor reviews come out.
