The right drivers regardless

Hi all,
In the future when monitor specs get good enough, will adaptive refresh be possible with any monitor with the right drivers regardless of the gsync or freesync standard? If it's possible with eDP laptops when and how will it be possible with desktop monitors?

Variable refresh rate technologies are quite similar -- FreeSync, HDMI VRR, VESA AdaptiveSync (and even GSYNC, especially GSYNC Compatible) -- implementations and quality vary a lot. But in theory a unified driver can drive all of them.

Currently, NVIDIA's driver now comes closest to a universal sync-technology driver, working with nearly all GSYNC and FreeSync monitors if you configure the driver to force G-SYNC Compatible mode onto a FreeSync monitor not certified by NVIDIA.

Critical subtle differences exists though.
-- AMD's driver works with DisplayPort and HDMI, while NVIDIA's driver works only with DisplayPort.
-- AMD's driver tends to better in some ways than NVIDIA's driver with native FreeSync monitors.
