About CRU Timings

Post by disq » 05 Nov 2019, 15:56

I recently came across this thread on Reddit, apparently on some AMD systems the memory clocks stay always at full speed if you are not using the "LCD Standard" option in CRU: https://old.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/d ... z_problem/

I also did a search here on BB and i found this thread reporting the same from some years ago: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2521&p=18837&hilit= ... ard#p18837

Now, i don't have an AMD system but i went and opened CRU to check my timings either way and while at 60Hz it doesn't change them, when i pick 144Hz the values do change.

My question is: Is it worth/better to change the default "Manual" to "LCD Standard"?

There was some thing awhile back where if you used "LCD Reduced" (lower vertical total), the card would remain in 3D mode. So anyone using 144hz refresh rate, if it used reduced timings, would not downclock. I don't think this applies to current cards. Pretty sure this was in the 7970/280x/290x era.

I'm not really concerned about that, my main question was if this is something worth changing on our monitors

As we can see, there's big numbers in certain parameters while using "LCD Standard" and i assume that it is better as long as it doesn't exceed the monitor's pixel clock but i'm not sure about this hence this thread :)

You don't need to change anything. The vertical blanking is what affects clocking down, and both screenshots have the same value. The only difference is the horizontal blanking is lower on the original with the totals matching the CVT-RB2 standard. Higher values would just waste bandwidth.
