Do i need dp 1.2 or hdmi 2.0 is fine? Surprisingly it works im getting 240hz, assumed the cable has to support the standard or is the classification tied to the gpu and monitor side, while the cable is the same piece of wire regardless?

The short answer is: It depends
The long answer is: It depends

It's a bit bucket limitation, not a refresh rate limitation.

Basically, the number of bits per second that a cable can support, and the support of the chips on both ends, dictates the limitations.

So if chips on both ends are HDMI 2.0 transciever chips (for the sending video, and the receiving video port), and you have a HDMI 2.0 cable, and the display supports the 240 Hz refresh rate, then it works.

In fact, you don't need HDMI 2.0 for 240Hz. I have seen older cables support 240Hz -- if it supports single-link 4K 60Hz, then it can support 1080p 240Hz if both the GPU and the display supports it.

Aha. I'm not even sure if the cable is 2.0 but it works. Must be supporting 4k 60Hz then. Thanks.
