Switch to 240hz or stay at 165hz

Post by dutchie84 » 07 Dec 2019, 04:59

Currently using the asus pg278qr 1440p monitor
Running at 165hz.

I'm having hard time choosing if a upgrade to 240hz 1080 panel is worth it ..
want the lowest input lag possible but with decent picture quality

What 240hz panel is worth the upgrade?

Thnx!

Any of the new 240hz IPS panels are worth it, as you'll have the benefits of low input lag with great picture quality.

Acer Nitro XV273X, Alienware AW2720HF and the Blur Busters tuned ViewSonic Elite XG270 (I own this) are the panels to get.

If you have the IPS version of the Asus PG278 then the 240hz ips panels are a big upgrade in terms of pixel response / motion clarity.

If you have the TN version it its less of an upgrade for motion. But a 240hz IPS has better viewing angles which people often describe as "better colors" because even when you look straight-on the corners of the panel are at an angle to each of our eyes etc.

In either case 165hz to 240hz won't change input lag feel much unless the PG278 has some weirdly long signal processing.

I own a 1080p 60hz 27" monitor and for me there is not enough pixel density at FHD to drive a 27 inch screen. I also feel 27 inch is just slightly too big for competitive gaming.

Personally i ordered the acer xn3 TN panel at 240Hz just to game. The new acer panels with the 1.9 AUO panel are pretty exciting.

I can definitely confirm 240Hz 1ms IPS is a big upgrade versus 165Hz 4ms IPS.

Although it's more complicated than this (curves, etc) -- the simplest way to understand this is an upgrade equivalent to the ratio of refresh cycle duration plus pixel response time. For example, (1/240 + 1ms) versus (1/165 + 4ms) which translates to ~5ms versus ~10ms worth of motion artifacts totalled (the entire sample and hold effect combined with ghosting effects). GtG numbers hard to standardize, as seen in Pixel Response FAQ: GtG Versus MPRT, but they typically worsen motion clarity above-and-beyond the refresh cycle duration, and also interfere with strobe quality.

I can totally understand pixel density of 27" 1080p -- that said, I just move my monitor about 3 to 4 inches further back, and it feels just like a 24" 1080p display. I also happen to be slightly far-sighted, so I prefer bigger-and-further. It ends up the same FOV. That said, many people's desks are not deep enough to move a 27" monitor further back and I can totally understand the "in-your-face" feeling of a low resolution too close to your face...
