Is my IPS monitor holding me back?

Post by GFresha » 10 Dec 2019, 05:31

Fortnite player here trying to compete at the high levels and I can't help but think that my IPS monitor is holding me back when competing at the high levels of this game (could also be a mindset thing but I gotta test this to be sure). Don't get me wrong being casually competitive in normal lobbies I absolutely kill it, but when it becomes super competitive, I feel like I am being held back by my IPS monitor, or atleast that's what I think. Only reason why I think this is I always feel a step behind or a shot behind, or a decision behind my mates, as if I am always late a second in my actions if that makes sense. And I feel like this is because I am using an IPS monitor:

My monitor is 1440p, IPS, gsync, and at 165 hz (overclocked) its the XB271HU.

Everywhere I look people are recommending TN over IPS for competetive games. I haven't found a single Fortnite pro that uses an IPS panel. I haven't even mentioned 240 hz yet, because I am just focused on the classic "IPS 4 MS vs TN 1 MS."

Can't even image a TN 240hz vs my current IPS 165 hz, the response time and the motion clarity for the TN monitor must be nice, one can only imagine :D

So my question is,

If I am on 144 hz IPS monitor compared to someone with 144 hz TN monitor, you guys think their is actually a decent difference between the two if we are talking strictly competitive at the highest levels?! I couldn't find pros mention IPS vs TN or any videos that compare the two and whether or not they are significant difference at super high competetive level.

I feel like the best way to go about this is to use my 1440p IPS monitor as a second monitor and buy my self a 240 hz TN monitor and test it out for a month and see if I personally can tell the difference. But I guess I just wanted to hear your guys take on this.

IPS for me is not a huge deal, but the bad things I heard about TN is the color accuracy, but how valid is this? If I were to sit in front of my monitor, will these color issues be a problem or are we talking only if someone is changing view angles and what not?

The huge deal for me is 1440p vs 1080. I absolutely love 1440p gaming for graphics games and this is why I am deciding to go with my 1440p as second monitor and bring in the 1080p 240 hz tn for comptetive games and switch between them depending on the games (I know its gona be a hassle but its the best of both worlds in my opinion)

I know their are 1440p IPS at 240 hz and this ofcourse solves my issue, but then again IPS is back in this case, whats the response time for 240 hz 1440p ips vs 240 hz 1080p tn?

I am currently eyeing the AW2518H and the PG258Q monitors as 1080p tn 240 hz gsync.

Really to summarize it

Out of 10 times if I have 144 hz IPS and my mate has 144 hz TN and we are both same exact skill, who’s gona come out on top or who would you bet on to come out on top?

Now what about if I’m 144 hz ips and he’s 240 hz rn lol prob 8 out of 10 he beat me

Please dont. They are using old TN Panels from 2017. Keep an eye on Monitors with new TN-Panels.

He's right, i would keep my eye on the new 1.9 AUO panels from acer, including the G-Sync XN3 here: https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/acer-xn253qx/

First of all, it’s important to mention that you don’t see any pros on IPS monitors because 240Hz IPS 24-25” monitors aren’t available as of now (hopefully very soon, though). I don’t know why no one else has brought that up.

Lets just assume both me and the other dude have same exact game sense, decision making, mechanics, skill, etc...

BUT only difference is I have 144hz IPS and he have 144 hz TN, who win? And we can also do 144 hz IP vs 240 hz TN, who wins? If hypothetically speaking, we are matched in every category you mentioned?

Definitely gotta consider this, whats the main reason behind getting 240 hz TN panel from this year and not from 2017? Is it the further improved colors or possible less response time/input lag or is the response time the same?

The pixel response time / overshoot is really really good. Have a look at these reviews:

https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/acer-xn253qx/

https://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/ac ... xf252q.htm
https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/ ... tro-xf252q

The pixel responsiveness of the xn253qx is exceptional. Dont try to compare reviews from different websites as the methodologies can be different.

I asked the reviewer of the nx253qx if the input lag at 144 was higher than a native monitor, he said it was fine. Check the comment section on the YouTube review https://youtu.be/7-WCB45RhbA

I chose the g sync version because of variable overdrive and am opinion from a reputable reviewer saying the input lag at 144hz was good.

I don't know, but I feel like you are trying to blame your monitor for your performance.
Have you also change your mouse, keyboard, mousepad, skatez, settings, etc, because you feel like this components were holding you back too?

You have guys performing very well on ipads pros with 60-120hz and a massive inputlag, you have pro players with 144hz monitors placing above pros with 240hz, and you also have handicapped(visual or auditiv) performing at high level

It's not your monitor that is olding you back.

A good IPS 144hz vs a good TN 144hz?
Easy answer, IPS.
My eyes will thank me in long term
