HP OMEN X27 vs XL2546 for CS:GO/Siege

Post by Rain_ » 07 Feb 2020, 08:54

Hi all,

Im looking for a new 240hz monitor after making the mistake of buying a C34J791 thinking it would be alright for working and gaming, huge mistake with terrible VA smearing and the worst motion clarity I've seen in a long time.

I used to have a Benq xl2420z and its motion clarity on the UFO test with the blur reduction was incredible, and after moving away from that monitor its really hurt my gaming performance alot. Im hugely sensitive to refresh rate and even jumping from 144 to 100 felt awful.

The obvious option would to jump to the newest Benq option at 240hz using their DyAc to keep the 240hz and still have good motion blur reduction, but moving from 1440p 34" to 1080p 24.5" is going to be quite a change.

My question is does the OMEN X27 get anywhere close to the XL2546 without any blur reduction as 240hz at 1440p sounds amazing for competitive games or would I be better going for the BenQ.

Thanks.

27 inches for competitive gaming = not good.

How so? I thought 27 inch was the sweet spot for object size at normal viewing distance?

There's an argument to be made about typical viewing distances and keeping the monitor in your central vision (and the reduction in motion perception issue there within), but it's an extremely weak one.

It's 15% more screen space at the same viewing distance, and 77% more pixels for greater clarity. If you're happy with a good TN implementation versus IPS (and for gaming, you should be), get the Omen. If you want to believe eSports-related snake oil, cave to peer pressure.

Me? If I'm buying a monitor, I'm buying it for the next 4-6 years at least and hoping for good things from microLED by that stage, and the Omen represents a nice sweet spot when it's on sale for under $550.

I'd wait a tad later and see what Samsung's G7 VA monitor looks like, in the sense it may have a solid strobing implementation that works well for competitive gaming. Additional QHD 240Hz models should be popping up in Q2 and Q3, and with any luck that'll push Omen prices down closer to $400-$450.

I would get the OMEN, unless you wanna go back to 2017 for some reason.

I agree with the poster above, I've never bought into the e-Sports smaller screen size argument, and definitely not the lower resolution argument. Bigger and more pixels = better. It's a no-brainer between those two, assuming price is about the same.
