Asus VG259QM vs VG279QM (25 inch vs 27 inch) - worse overdrive

Post by forii » 21 Apr 2020, 09:44

Alright,

So today I received the Asus VG279QM, I have been using for 2 weeks the version of VG259QM (25 inch version).

And what I insta check is the motion blur test on ufo site. I don't know why but they Overdrive 80 on the VG279QM looks like OD 60 on the VG259QM.

What im saying is, if I turn on the OD 80 on the 240Hz (VG259QM) I can see white halos around the ufo's, (like on the 100 OD but much smaller), when I turn OD to 60 It dissapears.

But 80 OD on the VG279QM looks much much cleaner, like 60 OD but better, and no halos around, and much sharper. = faster

If I even put OD 80 on 27 inch version and when I scroll text on the website/forum its much less visible the halos around like it was on the 25 inch version.

I checked the firmware and the VG279QM has FM version MCM102, when the VG259QM has the version MCM103, which is quite obvious because 25 inch was second version. But seems that the firmware is different compare to second and first model.

I also tested the ELMB, and it looks better on the VG259QM, more sharper, when on the VG279QM is less sharper, I dont know if this is due 27 inch version or what.

Anyway the most noticed thing is the 80 OD on the 27 inch version vs 80 OD on 24 inch version (which now I understand how bad is on the VG259QM).

When it comes to the games, 27 inch looks obv bigger and the enemies are bigger.

Its more pixelated but in games I think it might help on ther further distance, so you can see enemies much easier - thats a pros.

Due to worst Overdrive on the 25 inch I might stick with the 27 inch version. It's sad that the firmware of the OSD is worse with Overdrive on second version of this monitor.
I have 21 days to refund + 14 days to ship the monitor back, so I think i will keep the 27 inch and wait for MSI to compare it with each other.

Ah, and almost forgot, with the same OSD settings of colors, the VG279QM on the white desktop is more yellowish. To fix that I need to use Color Temp set to Normal, instead of Custom, I don't know why is that. Maybe someone knows? I heard 27 inch had better colors, but seems like 25 inch has better colors in that case, cuz you can calibrate them easier. With custom mode turned on, i cant get rid of the yellowish white color, to keep the white - white i need to keep the normal mode.

It would be really interesting if Vg259qm's owners can confirm this. Maybe your 259 was defective ?
It would be just sad to be forced to buy the 27" version... better buy the mag251rx then.

I already bought the Acer Nitro XF252Q, and just testing it right now, because I had 144hz TN before and im used to clear motion of the enemy ( i still have it) and its hard to adapt to me to go for 240hz ips, even tho they are so fast.

And damn, the motion blur is so clean on this acer compare to Asus, this is what I were missing on any 240Hz IPS, no matter if Mag or Asus, there is no any IPS who can beat this motion clarity while moving. Also I managed to calibrate the colors close to the IPS. Yep, its not the same but still motion clarity is much better and that matters for gaming, fast shooters.
This acer even has VBR - off - normal (brightness like on asus, even better), and extreme mode which I dont see difference vs normal, except less brightness.

With VBR turned only at normal its smoke the asus even with elmb + 280hz, because there is no crosstalk like on asus.

MCM105 is latest on my VG259QM. White is white. No sort of yellowish tint at all. For whatever reason having ELMB off seems the most responsive or least amount of delay or whatever. To my eyes visually they seem so close on the test. I have a ton of displays, my favorite being the Omen X 25f (I have Omen X 27 as well). The VG259QM seems every bit as fast when set up to my preferences.

The same thing about OD 80 - looks like a bit of overshoot. OD 60 without any overshoot, but more image smearing.
