Buy XL2546S now? Anything better coming out soon?

Post by nexina7350 » 17 Jun 2020, 14:49

Hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade my XL2411Z (already overclocked to 200hz) to play competitive FPS games such as CS:GO and Valorant. I know the XL2546S is the current must-have, but it seems like it only has minor improvements over the XL2546. To me, this looks like TN technology is pretty stagnant and already a few years old.

Are there any game changers announced that might come out this year or early next year? I remember reading about a 360Hz monitor being announced.

What would you guys do in my situation? Pull the trigger or wait for a monitor that will introduce a "real" technological leap?

If I were you, I'd surely wait for these 360 Hz monsters that arrive this year, or I'd just buy something better for now and then sell it when the time for next upgrade comes.

Also, you don't necessarily need to rely on TN panels anymore, IPS technology has improved dramatically in terms of response times, refresh rates and motion clarity. There already are some amazing IPS displays on the market, that can actually compete with top TNs, while they also offer much better colour reproduction and accuracy, as well as wide viewing angles.

I've recently tested ASUS TUF VG279QM (280 Hz IPS) and BenQ Zowie XL2546 (without S, the older one), and in all honesty, I enjoyed playing on the VG279QM more. That is, of course, my subjective opinion, but you need to admit that an average of 3.82 ms GtG at 280 Hz with extremely low overshoot (below 1% average error) is actually quite amazing for an IPS panel. I could not see any ghosting nor inverse ghosting while playing games, and the motion was clearer by a noticeable margin comparing to my 1440p 165 Hz IPS G-SYNC display.

There is a thread about fast IPS panels in this forum section. Perhaps it'd be worth to take a look. The new ASUS ROG SWIFT 360 Hz will probably be a TN panel, but who knows? I don't think they revealed that information yet. Dell already announced that 360 Hz IPS monitor is coming - Alienware AW2521H :) Both of them are arriving somewhere this year.

I kinda doubt we will see 360hz in major production before Q1 2021. Just my estimate.
So if u want performance and top notch FPS game type monitor, get xl2546s.

We don't even have proper XL2546S reviews yet. I doubt it beats Omen X 25f in performance and non-strobed (people don't usually use BR for CSGO) motion clarity.
BenQ XL2546K @ 240Hz (DyAC+) • ROCCAT Kone Pro Air @ 1000Hz • HyperX Alloy Origins • CORSAIR MM350 PRO Premium • HyperX Cloud Revolver • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 @ 2130MHz/8000MHz • Intel Core i7-8700K @ 4.8GHz • G.SKILL RipjawsV 16GB (2x8GB) 3000MHz CL15

Wait, pros don't use DyAc? Does that mean the XL2546 is pretty much equivalent to the XL2546S then, considering the biggest difference is the DyAc+?

According to prosettings.net there are many who do, and many who don’t. It’s a personal preference.
