1440p 240Hz users: What are your GPU idle clocks?

Post by cusideabelincoln » 22 Aug 2020, 07:14

I seem to be having high idle clockspeeds on my GTX 1080 Ti when I'm using 240 Hz on a 1440p display. Is this normal for everyone else?

When I set the refresh rate down to 144Hz the clockspeeds under idle return to normal and my GPU reports ~15W power usage, as opposed to 60W at 240 Hz.

I did a clean install of Nvidia driver 452.06 using DDU and the issue still remains. Is this supposed to be normal behavior?

When the monitor goes into sleep mode under 240 Hz, the GPU clocks and power consumption do return to expected behaviour.

I only bring this up because this issue did not seem to happen when I first connected the monitor and even ran dual 1440p monitors, but after a few hours this appears to be the new normal behavior.

Hi,

maybe my answer came too late but I have the same issue. In idle when I set monitor to 240Hz my gpu clock will rise at max frequency and gpu usage is 20W.
This started happening after a week. I am really confused. But when I lower Hz to 144 gpu clock is OK and gpu usage is 4W.

RTX 3070.
1440p 270hz 16w idle
1440p 144 14w.
1440p 60 12w.

Same clocks.

Sometimes there is a bug with the idle mode not being activated, the clocks stay high even in idle state and its GPU driver bug of nvidia. Clean driver wipe and driver reinstall sometimes helps. I had this issue with my 1660Ti, it sometimes got stuck in windows at high clocks.

Never had that issue. Maybe you have something in the background forcing high clocks? or an app set to prefer high performance in the drivers.

Anyway his problem is he has an older gpu. 1440p 240hz hits the memory hard, pretty sure you need turing+ to keep low clocks at idle.

I dont have this problem anymore as i said, it was often solved by hard reinstalling drivers, sometimes even reboot was enough but it was annoying as its appeared after few days again. I sold this GPU 3 months ago.
