Strange interactions with static electricity and monitor

Post by ko4 » 15 Sep 2020, 03:27

Earlier today when I unpacked and installed my MAG251rx, the plastic outer shell happened to give a static shock to the power supply plug when I attempted to plug it in. I'm certain it was static electricity because I could feel the plastic attract the hairs on my arm before the discharge. The buildup was probably caused by movement during shipping.
The weird thing is that it caused my second monitor, which was plugged into my pc and operating, to flicker/dim for a second

This happened when I unpacked and installed my first mag251rx with a dead pixel, and also with the replacement.
The first time it happened I thought I was hallucinating, but the second time I was sure.

I did some digging and came across these posts

Theres many more threads documenting such strange behavior between monitors and emi/static electricity

I'm not that knowledgeable about electricity but I'm wondering if anyone can explain HOW the static shock caused my second monitor to flicker
Did the buildup discharge thru the monitor power supply, and caused a spike in my UPS or something like that?
Hoping Chief Blur Bluster can chime in with an explanation :D

Not sure but this could potentially have caused damage to my GPU/PC if I decided to plug in the HDMI or displayport cable first. The outer shell of my mag251rx had accumulated quite the charge and produced a very audible and visible SPARK when the power plug came into contact with it.
Maybe thats how RLSCcontender fried his pc (joke)
