Buying 144hz monitor

Post by ocbdoppler » 24 Sep 2020, 11:09

Hi guys so like 3 days back i bought C27G2ZE 27 inch VA AOC, and well i was super unhappy-

It had insane ghosting, supper blurry was just an unplesant expiriance. Tried everything internet suggested nothing worked. Took it back today.

But i learned 2 things, 27 inch might be to big for me and I dont wanna risk on a bugget 240 hz VA.

So now I wanna buy a 144hz IPS panel and i have choice between few models i hope some one can maybe trow in a suggetion :

1. AOC 24G2U - I am kinda afraid of AOC now, but It has alot of decent rewievs.

2. ViewSonic XG2405 -

3.MSI Optix G241

4. LG 27GL650F-B - This one is 27 inch but my friend has it, and tbh it looks amazing. Only reason why i dont wanna buy it imeadatly is because its 27 inch, maybe i could adjust to it in time but 24 inch feels like the right size for me.

I would consider the 2020-era "1ms IPS" panels.

Many 2019-era 144Hz IPS are rated "3ms IPS" panels.

Even though GtG pixel response speeds are slower in real world, the new panels has quite visibly noticeably approximately 1/3rd the IPS ghosting of yesteryear's slower IPS and much closer to TN than they used to be.

I strongly recommend the 1ms IPS panels manufactured in year 2020 or later. There are 144Hz and 165Hz variants, just make sure it is a recent IPS.

I'm with you in 24" Inch being the perfect size monitor (although everyone's going to have different preferences which is more than fine of course).

I was personally disappointed with the 24G2, but a lot of people seem to be happy with it, and you might be too, as it's a good gaming monitor. Not sure if you are primarily gaming on your monitor or what your main uses are. You shouldn't see any ghosting, blurring, or flickering issues that VA panels tend to have. The viewing angles on the 24G2 are noticeably poor, may not be a big issue for you, but I figure if you are paying for IPS, you should expect great viewing angles and color uniformity. I found it to be quite "grainy" as well, probably due to the anti-glare filter, making pixels look bigger. It goes on sale for $180 USD, so it's not nearly as big of an investment as other monitors.

I would agree with Chief, though, and look for the newer 2020 IPS panels. I wish I had a list of all of them, because I've been looking for a nice 24" 144hz-240hz quality gaming monitor all this year and haven't found one that stands out as a clear winner. The only 2 I really have in mind right now are the AW2521HFL and the MSI Optix MAG251RX (I think that's a 2020 model but not sure). Just waiting for those to come down in price. I'm not totally sold on either of those, though.

So after some thoughts and this topic, i got a bit scared from the aoc one, and bought LG 27GL650F-B

Why not the new gen monitors ? simply Couse i cant afford more then like 300 $. And they all seam to be in 400 price range.

Now this one doesn't have ghosting or noticeable blur, but hell its just no good....

1. I cant get proper gamma settings, like no matter what i switch it looks shit, colors have no vibrancy it kinda feels like playing in black and white mode... Some games who override settings like cs go look decent but still worse then my old 60 hz lg...

2. The brightness is insane like i have to put 20 % brightness + flux and it still feels bad. ( I adjusted colors without darkening the screen first)

3. And again its like 3 hours of work no games and my eyes are dead.... when before i could ez pull of 6 hours of work and then go gaming..

So is this how it should be for the price? Do the issues naturally come with 144 hz?

Its just hard to belive that 5 year old monitor what I bought for like 120 $ looks better then anything i tried so far...

I would try ViewSonic XG2405,it can go quite low in brightness, also it come well calibrated and luminance uniformity is maybe above average in this class.

That's an interesting note. How would one go about finding models that use the newer panels? Just looking at the GtG response time ratings?
