27" monitor with G-sync MODULE. What's the best one?

Post by Yesthisis » 23 Oct 2020, 19:32

So i have been looking for replacement on my PG278Q monitor.

PG279QE i have tried but the one i received was full of dead pixels + pretty bad backlight bleed.

One option that i have been looking was ViewSonic ELITE XG2790QG, but apperantly that has bad QC regarding backlight bleed. Many users have reported horrible backlight bleed.

One option that i have been eyeing is Lenovo Y27GQ-25.(for 750€) This seem OK QC backlight bleed and overall decent monitor with V2 Module. However, some user have reported bad anti glare coating, how bad is it overall?

Reasons for module vs G-sync combatible is that my understading the module reduces lag vs. freesync one. Also it can go lower FPS and overall works better more reliably (No flickering etc.)

Also, i'm currently running 980ti. Can this support V2 G-sync modules? (I have RTX 3080 in pre-order but god knows how long will that be before i get one)

When compared to official G-SYNC Compatible, while it can be lower, the module does not significantly reduce input lag (this is more dependent on the monitor model, panel type, max Hz, and processing lag), but it does indeed offer variable overdrive support, guarantee full hardware LFC, and tends to avoid flicker in the upper G-SYNC range.

As for GPU module support, 1) these aren't technically "V2" modules. Those are reserved for "G-SYNC Ultimate," which have full HDR support at 4k with FALD backlights, etc, and 2) G-SYNC monitors with modules support (650 Ti BOOST to) 7 series GPUs and up, whereas G-SYNC Compatible monitors only support 10 series GPUs and up.

Is variable overdrive something that's always on and working or only when G-Sync is enabled?

Only during G-SYNC operation with variable refresh. There would be no need for it in fixed refresh mode, as refresh rate is then static.

IPS or TN, doesn't matter. The one that has least amount of Backlight bleed and quality panel overall.

1440p.

I have been looking around and Dell's upcoming Alienware AW2721D seems the most promising.

(Whispers in your ear) 1440p 240Hz IPS wide-gamut. Coming 2021.

But, if you're buying the best 1440p G-SYNC eye candy today, then buy any 2020-era 1440p 165Hz NanoIPS G-SYNC monitor. Absolutely beautiful. Much better than any 2019-and-prior 165Hz IPS. Reds are shockingly deep red, really really really roses-red, and everything 72% NTSC looks like black-and-white compared to these 2020-era 1440p 165Hz 1ms NanoIPS (And similar) panels.

I have the ViewSonic XG270QG IPS here too, no backlight bleed on my unit. Just the usual moderate IPS glow you see on a lot of IPS monitors, but nonissue at normal viewing distances to me. The reds are absolutely stunning, though you should be aware of red KSF phosphor ghosting if you want to use ULMB instead of G-SYNC on any panel backlights utilizing KSF-phosphor LEDs.

1440p.
In the here and now, there's honestly not a lot of choices within those parameters. I'll provide a starter list below, but be aware that availability and cost may depend on your country...

G-SYNC (w/module) 2015 IPS panels (AU Optronics):
- Acer XB271HU
- ASUS PG279Q
- ViewSonic XG2703-GS
- AOC AG271QG

G-SYNC (w/module) 2019 IPS panels (LG):
- Viewsonic XG270QG (RTINGS reviewed this one favorably: https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/ ... te-xg270qg)
- HP OMEN 27 (not to be confused with the "X 27," which is 240Hz, or the "27i," which is G-SYNC Compatible. There's also a TN version with the same model name. Super confusing, I know.)

And that's honestly about all there is available for 1440p IPS panels w/native G-SYNC.

The 2015 panels have an sRGB colorspace with ~1200:1 contrast ratios, whereas the 2019 panels have a wide gamut colorspace with ~800:1 contrast ratios and slightly better motion clarity (GtG).

As for blacklight bleed, it's a gamble no matter what IPS display you buy, and will even vary from unit to unit of the same model. To a slightly lesser degree, this goes for TN panels as well.

Finally, regarding native G-SYNC TN panels, I'm not as familiar with those models. Nvidia has a relatively up to date list you can filter here for model numbers:
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/pr ... ors/specs/

If you include G-SYNC Compatible panels, you're choices will increase near exponentially, but you will of course not be getting hardware G-SYNC.

If you narrow your requirements/priorities down a bit, I may be able to offer more specific recommendations.

hmmm the ViewSonic Elite XG270QG.Wanted to upgrade to 1440p from my 1080p 144hz g-sync TN panel but didn't want to lose on g-sync and motion clarity of a TN but nano ips are supposed to have better motion clarity over normal ips right?

I was considering the LG 27GL850-B at first but it's g-sync compatible not true g-sync untill I saw your comment mentioning the ViewSonic Elite XG270QG and it's basically LG 27GL850-B but with true G-sync!

Hows picture clarity in fps games if you don't mind me asking?I also want g-sync because of the hz range (I believe the ViewSonic Elite XG270QG has a range of 30-165) which is good because some of my games drops to the low 30s (very intensive games)

Also From reviews the XG270QG seems to have worst overshoot then the LG 27GL850-B? https://youtu.be/ejx1hGUorG0?t=491
