Shroud received his 1440p 240hz display

Shroud (extremely popular twitch streamer / csgo/valorant player) has received his 1440p 240hz monitor and is ranting on how he sees no meaningful differenec between 1080p and 1440p. this is what I've always thought as well, any 1080p monitior can look as good as 1440p as long as the render resolution/DSR is set properly, and otherwise so damn similar.

I agree that when you're gaming, the difference isn't as noticeable.

Here's the thing though... people that think that streamers/gamers know anything special about computer hardware is ridiculous. SOME of them do but they are the exception rather than the rule.

Shroud knows how to click heads.

However I'll look to professional display reviewers for display quality / response time / image quality.

IMHO, 1440p 240Hz IPS advantages is enabling 240Hz to be more jack-of-all trades, for Visual Studio, PhotoShop, Netflix, browsing, gaming, all-in-one monitor. Today, we're all about separate monitors for gaming and for other things, but that isn't going to be the case forever.

I can for sure see a difference. There's more of a screen door effect, as there always will be, because the pixels are physically larger. Of course, this effect will be better or worse depending on how far you sit from the monitor.

I think there is a definite advantage to 1440 over 1080 depending on the game and your visual acuity. My play style is typically long range sniping and I found the upgrade very beneficial. Targets that are so far away they barely take up any pixels on a 1080p display are a lot easier to see on a 1440p display.

If you're playing something like counter strike that has a small field of view and targets are always large increased resolution isn't going to help much.

Id be very interested in knowing what settings you've used to get closer to a 1440p look on your 1080p monitor. I've been considering making a jump to 1440p from 1080p now that they have 240hz @ 1440p but if there are some settings that narrow the gap that would be fantastic.

It depends what size the monitor is as well, 27" 1440p is going to look similar to 24-25" 1080p.

I tried a 24" Gsync 1440p a while back and in game its alot sharper but at the expense of alot of performance, but it messes up windows so you need to run at non native because it makes everything tiny.

This once used to be true, but not anymore:

The good news is Windows 10 now has improved handling of HiDPI.

You just adjust Windows DPI to 150% or thereabouts and everything is bigger with sharper text without needing to use a non-native resolution. Even browsing at original 100% browser zoom — no zooming needed. Text stays sharp even if photos In pages are upscaled slightly.

Type “change windows DPI” in the windows search box and give it a try today! 1440p and 4K at small sizes is now a lot less painful than it used to be in older versions of Windows.

Windows finally “got with the program” when Apple went to Retina Macs. Years late. But as a PhotoShop user, Visual Studio user, Microsoft Office user, and a web browser user.... all the apps no longer have tiny text on small 24” 4K monitors, I just simply configure DPI->200% or even DPI->250% (Custom) and Windows now goes “retina” like a Retina Mac.

Everything gets bigger and sharper, staying 4K with gigantic icons & gigantic text.

(Legacy Windows apps can be a bit pixellated/blurry at the HiDPI Handling of Windows 10, but at least you can still read the text on those, even too.)

Ah thats cool, I don't think manufacturers are bothering with <27" 1440p now though are they?

4K screens and 1440p screens in laptops too, some of them gaming laptops. Say, the Razer Blade with the 4K option. And some use a LG CX 48” OLED television as a computer monitor, the the text is a bit smallish at 100% DPI when put on your desk. Or any 4K monitor smaller than 48” for that matter.

So many situations where DPI scaling comes to the rescue to give a Retina Windows experience now that most newer Windows apps now finally support it properly...

Yeah, Microsoft did lag behind Mac on the “Retina” craze, but in current W10 builds they’re caught up on the “Retina” monitor compatibility without tiny text. And at 300% Custom DPI you turn 4K into a razor crystal sharp 720p experience that even Grandma can read without eyeglasses. While Resolution still stays at “3840x2160”.
