Do I need a good PC to test monitor?

Post by Multiplex » 26 Nov 2020, 16:51

I’m thinking about getting the Lenovo Y25-25 (240Hz), but don’t have a pc to test the ghosting and or visible overshoot. What I do have is a laptop with a GTX850m on it, but I don’t know if that would be enough to test it in the ghosting ufo test seeing as it’s 240Hz refresh rate. Can anybody tell me if I’ll be able to get 240fps on the test with alaptop from 2015? Thanks. :)

Most probably yes, unless your laptop does not support 240Hz output. You need to check the specs of your laptop and check the maximum resolution and refresh rate of its external display output.

You need DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0 to run 240hz. HDMI 2.0 support started with GTX 900 series cards. (Your 850M is limited to HDMI 1.4)

You need DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0 to run 240hz at 1080p. HDMI 2.0 support started with GTX 900 series cards. (Your 850M is limited to HDMI 1.4)
Fixed that for you.

DP and HDMI has no inherent refresh rate limitation, except limitations imposed by EDID spec, drivers and operating systems. I've seen really high refresh rates done at really low resolutions on some displays.

However, it is indeed easier with newest equipment, since they're less likely to have arbitrary caps on refresh rates that prevent you from using a higher refresh rate.
