Samsung Odyssey 'Scanlines' (G9 + Others)

Post by rustyk » 02 Dec 2020, 13:39

Multiple people are reporting horizonal lines that appear on the screen when viewing certain types of images and test paterns.
The pixel inversion test also 'triggers' this behaviour.

Here's a link to a discussion:

Here's a link to a decent video that someone made:
https://youtu.be/AK3phI80Xzo
You can see the effect at 100% and 110% zoom levels. You can see the change in brightness plus absence of lines at 120%

Can anyone help explain what is happening here and even possibly shed some light on whether this will be an issue on all the Samsung 240Hz VA panels?

Basically, when displaying certain finely detailed images, you get horizontal lines across the screen, which are clearly visible and have the effect of reducing resolution. Also, the brightness of the display itself will dim and on my current (2nd) G9, I can almost hear what seems to be coil whine coming from the monitor.

When I recreate the issue on my display, I can even toggle it dragging and resizing my browser window. If I make it small enough, everthing it fine, but as soon as I drag it open a bit more, the display dims and the so called scanlines appear.
For me, it only happens at 240hz.

Here's another (long) reddit thread where the issue is discussed:

I just managed to record a video where this is very pronouned, so will try to upload it somewhere and link it.
It's 48MB and I don't seem to be able to upload it here.

I'm just trying to establish if all of these monitors do this and if so, why. Also, I'm trying to establish if there is a variance between units.
