144hz or 240hz?

Post by Tabo » 10 Dec 2020, 09:26

Hello, i am looking to upgrade my 60hz monitor but i don't know what to do.
I only play CSGO and I get an avarage of 250fps but sometimes they drop at around 190.
So my questions are: should I buy a 240hz monitor or a 144hz? Do I need a g-sync compatible monitor or not? Does turning on g-sync sacrifice something?
I am interested only in input lag and pixel response time (i don't care about bad colors)
My specs are:
-gtx 1050
-i5 8700
-8GB of RAM

100% 240Hz+ as you still benefit from faster scanout and potentially faster pixel response depending on if it's one of the newer panels, how the mfr set their overdrive levels, etc.

Gsync is up to you. For ultra-competitive, Vsync off is typically the best route.

Do I risk any kind of tearing?

Vsync off / no VRR = tearing chance.
But since you mentioned you prioritize input lag, that's the trade-off.

If you want to experiment, just get a Gsync 240Hz+ monitor with fast pixel response times. Then you can choose Gsync for other non-ultra-competitive games.

Do you have any good monitor raccomandations for low imput lag, fast pixel response time and no tearing? (for my specs and avarage fps)

Don't worry too much about your specs because you will still benefit from 240Hz. Especially with relatively easy-to-render games like CS and Valorant.

Well, in the 240Hz 1080p category, I own the PG258Q which has served me well but I've heard good things about the 0.5ms XL2546K ($500) which has DyAc+. I believe it's Gsync compatible (but it definitely doesn't have a module).

Some other supposedly good ones include:

Freesync (but Gsync compatible):
The Zowie price is $200 below the PG259QN 360Hz ($700). So keep relative price in mind.

Lastly, some of the newer IPS monitors have fast response times rivaling TN too so keep that in mind. Obviously you get benefits of IPS colors and viewing angles.

E.g. VG259QM 280Hz has pretty good reviews.
