SLOW ALT-TAB FIX (con: HDR brokes)

Post by pusep » 11 Dec 2020, 11:56

Hi guys, I just found the way to fix slow alt-tabbing, tested several times, we will change only NECESSARY settings, I have checked every setting. My rig win7x64 + new monitor MAG251RX. Let's start. I will talk about 1080p (1920x1080) monitors. If your monitor is 1440p just swap 1080p with 1440p in my guide. Download Custom Resolution Utility (CRU): https://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thre ... tility-CRU
I used 1.4.1 but 1.4.2 should work, unpack, run CRU.exe. You will see 3 fields: detailed resolutions, standard resolutions and extension blocks. Delete all 1920x1080 lines in detailed resolutions and standard resolutions EXCEPT one in detailed resolutions 1920x1080 ~240hz. (I have 239.964 hz there, I don't recommend changing it to 240 hz because I think it's from monitor, monitor knows better). After that you should have something like this:
https://imgur.com/a/T8Pb0vs
NEXT double click on CEA-861 line in extension blocks field. Delete all 1920x1080 lines in detailed resolutions. In data blocks field double click on TV resolutions and delete all 1920x1080 lines, click OK. Delete HDR static metadata line in data blocks field. Click OK. Click OK again. Run restart64.exe or restart.exe. DONE. Check your nvidia or amd control panel and set desired HZ, scaling, etc. The only downside is broken HDR, I think it's because ALT-TAB does something with HDR like activates it on desktop, because I have disabled HDR in my game, still HDR static metadata line should be deleted to mitigate slow alt-tabbing. Maybe it's because of lacking HDR settings on windows 7, I don't know, maybe it activates on desktop somehow. If you have an idea how to fix slow ALT-TABBING and keep HDR - tell me!

Thanks, if I wanted 280hz and 240hz options to show up in my NCP do I just add another resolution in detailed resolutions for it? or in standard?(I have the 280hz in detailed right now, unsure where to put the 240hz)
Edit: seems if I keep 280hz in detailed resolutions and 240hz in the CEA-861 the alt tabbing is still slow, so is there anywhere else I can add the 240hz?
Edit2: I deleted the 240hz in CEA, and put it in the detailed resolutions with the 280hz, that didn't work, still slow alt tabbing, guess you can only have 1 resolution/hz?

Also is there a way to get back to all the standard resolutions and HDR if I wanted to go back to default? I'm guessing rest-all.exe?

leave everything alone, click CEA, delete 144, leave 240 and add 280. If you only use 280hz then I suggest only adding that as I heard some games get buggy. Below it delete HDR static meta and that's it click restart64. reset all will restore default values

What's the difference with keeping the 1080p in CEA vs the OPs way?
Will there be an issue leaving 280hz in the first detailed resolution and in the CEA detailed resolution?
Just tried your method I still get slow alt tabbing with some games like CoD Warzone(fullscreen 1080p same hz etc) maybe the game is fussy but works fine with the other method

Man, you should do EXACTLY as I said. You should keep only one native resolution (1920x1080 in my case) with your desired HZ. If your monitor is 144 hz 1080p so keep it and delete all the rest. I mean keep 1080p 144 hz, and delete 1080p 60 hz, 1080 120 hz and so on. You can't keep 1080p 240 hz and 1080p 280 hz both, you should choose one. To reset settings run reset-all.exe first and restart64.exe after that.

I don't know, I have a ready to go acronis image of installed and tuned win10, but volume OSD makes me crazy, you can't even turn it off.

Only issue with your method is that adaptive sync now doesn't work in some games(Warzone, Cold War so far tested) and for some reason it thinks it's fullscreen borderless(have an app on my desktop that's always there except when a program/game is fullscreen and in games on fullscreen I still see it)
Also tried resetting NCP adaptive sync settings setting it to fullscreen only and fullscreen and borderless, game settings and in the monitor too etc doesn't work.

There's some potential additional instructions for certain monitors, it's easily overlooked.

For the "delete-all-refresh-rates" trick to eliminate Alt+Tab slowness, you also have to make sure sync technology is the same for Windows and Games.

G-SYNC/FreeSync ON for Windows and games (G-SYNC completely enabled; windowed *and* fullscreen in NVCP)

OR

G-SYNC/FreeSync OFF for Windows and games (G-SYNC completely disabled). Then you eliminate the Alt+Tab blackouts.

___________

The other legitimate trick is the 1920x1079 trick (create custom resolution containing only ONE refresh rate, while also disabling monitor scaling, use GPU scaling -> "no scaling") and also configure similar sync technology as described above. Sometimes easier on certain models of monitors, but for the ASUS, usually the delete-refresh-rates trick is easier than the 1920x1079 trick which is good if the monitor avoids glitching/scaling/blurring.
