Monitors confusion and potentially a wrong choice?

Post by JediMa » 21 Dec 2020, 22:06

I planned to change my monitor after for years for this Christmas, I had an ASUS MG279Q 27'' 1440p. I started to read everywhere, official reviews, feebacks, tests but i've found so many different opinions about the same models. Another matter that disappointed me was that all of them had a very high % of faulty screens. So the few ones that seemed ok were LG 27GL850 (or GN) and ASUS VG27AQ.
LG went out of stock and I tried an ASUS VG27AQ1A because I thought that being newer than the ASUS VG27AQ was better. BIG mistake, fake colors, bad brightness and so I returned it to replace it with an ASUS VG27AQ. This last one is just really better than the 2020 version, more natural colors, more bright. I'm using it with G-sync and ELMB OFF because my 2070Super can't push constantly over 100 at 1440p.
My big concern is about the "supposed" bad performance of my monitor under 80 - 90 and I wonder if I made the right choice or if I should change it with an LG or another monitor or if i have to set better my Asus. AS you can read I'm very confused and so any little help is really welcome

p.s I'm italian, so I apologize about my bad english

The ASUS VG27AQ is an sRGB monitor but it's badly calibrated with high gamma (image looks darker than it should) and no way to adjust it via OSD settings. It also has badly implemented overdrive (too much overshoot/inverse ghosting at low refresh rates).

The LG 27GL850 is a wide color gamut monitor (98% DCI-P3) but it has an sRGB mode. However, this mode locks the overdrive settings, which causes overshoot at low refresh rates.

The VG27AQ1A also is a wide color gamut monitor (95% DCI-P3) and I think it has an sRGB mode, but I'm not sure if it locks other settings and/or causes any issue (most likely it does).

So none of them is fine? the VG27AQ1A was quite bad, worse than ASUS VG27AQ

No, sadly no 1440p IPS 144+Hz monitor is perfect and all of them exhibit issues, it's a matter of deciding which ones you are willing to accept.

Personally, I tried the LG 27GL850 and the ACER XV272UP and I'm going to return both.

What you dont like of the LG ?
to be honest my Asus seems not to perform that bad, but it's very hard to tell. I'm going to test it better with Cyberpunk 2077 where i've roughly 60fps and so I can test monitor limits.

Mainly what I stated about the sRGB mode locking the overdrive. I mostly play graphically demanding single player games and the overshoot is very noticeable at low refresh rates. Also its stand is quite bad and there is some backlight bleed.

If you like the ASUS I think you should keep it, but you would do well testing it a bit.

I usually play World Of Warcraft, Destiny 2, and games like Witcher 3, Cybepunk 2077 so nothing super fast beside D2. And yes aBout LG you can't use sRGB without that issue, that's on tftcentral and rtigns reviews too

Just wondering, what about the Gigabyte M27Q? Hardware Unboxed did a review and it seems like a nice option, also it's relatively cheap. No serious problems, good response time, and apparently the overdrive is decent too. But besides that, I couldn't find much info about it.
I ended up talking about it with a friend that is upgrading from an old Asus VG248QE and he ended up buying that monitor, it was shipped yesterday and he's still waiting for it to arrive.

Well, it's a wide color gamut monitor and Hardware Unboxed mentions its sRGB mode is not good. I guess if you don't care about color oversaturation, it's a fine option.
