Been using 441.41 Nvidia drivers. Windows just forced driver 456.71?

Post by BTRY B 529th FA BN » 06 Jan 2021, 10:38

I've been using the 441.41 Nvidia drivers because I read somewhere that the latency has been measure to be the lowest with these. 5 minutes ago my screen flickered, I checked Event Viewer and I found out Windows just forced my GPU to update to driver 456.71 Why?

That's default Windows behavior. To disable it, you can download DDU (https://www.wagnardsoft.com/), and apply the below option:

Thanks!!!

Just simply apply that option, or do I need to do anything else? I haven't uninstalled any drivers with DDU in a long while and forgot how to work the program.

Just enable the option. You don't have to use DDU further. You can manually uninstall 456.71 and reinstall 441.41 if you don't want to use DDU to do it.

Does this prevent all device driver updates? e.g. my Apex Pro TKL got a windows driver update recently, my Intel I211 Network adapter recently got a driver update from windows, too. If so, do I simply just un-tick the option in DDU?

EDIT: is there a simple registry edit, or windows service to disable, instead of using DDU?

It just prevents the entries under "optional updates" on the Windows update screen from downloading and installing automatically to my knowledge. You can still select and install them manually.

You may need to use DDU at least once to uninstall the driver for that setting to take full effect then.

If you don't want to use DDU, and you want to disable a specific update (the Nvidia driver in this case), you can try this utility instead:

It's been an optional update to download and install, for the past month or so. Maybe when I checked the option in DDU it enabled automatic install? But in the first place I never messed with the option to install it. Something weird is going on with it.

When you hover the mouse over the setting a help description pops up and it says:
In easy term, this option will denies (denies is the incorrect grammar, should be deny, let alone term that should be terms) "Windows/Device Manager" to check for driver update on "Windows Update".
Note: This doesn't prevent "Windows Update" to download/install new drivers.
Note2: It is also *HIGHLY* recommended to revert this change after you finished using DDU and reinstalled your GPU driver or you may have problem with other device instillation.

At this point it seems Windows is forcing me to update the driver. I'll try again some other time.

Doubt it. Windows auto updated your Nvidia driver in the first place because it detected you had an old version installed. This is default behavior, at least with Nvidia drivers in my experience (Windows will also do this if it doesn't detect a Nvidia driver installed).

I assumed checking that option with DDU would prevent this, even if you didn't use DDU to uninstall the existing driver, but again, apparently you have to to make it work.

Instead, uncheck that option, and look to see what the button below says:

Image

If your button says the same thing it does in the image, click it and restart your computer, which should set Windows behavior back to default (if it already isn't).

Then, uninstall your driver, use the official Windows tool I most recently linked to exempt the Nvidia driver from Windows Update, and then install your desired driver version.

Not sure how this will pan out but I tried the tool when windows update was downloading the driver again, the tool identified the driver, I selected to hide it. That worked. I rebooted, windows started downloading the driver again, I ran the tool, the tool didn't find the driver, the driver installed. I had to uninstall the driver again. It reverted back to 441.41. I ran the tool several more times. Rebooted, ran the tool several more times, and it hasn't found anything. I'm back to 441.41 but I'm not sure how long this will last.
