Questioning my Monitor Choice

Post by 24dollars » 06 Jan 2021, 19:27

I saw the ASUS TUF VG27AQ on sale for 299 USD or 382 CAD and I jumped at it. IPS 1440p/144hz for under 300! I was so happy until... until I saw the monitor reviews. Apparently its not good at 60hz, and that I would constantly have to tweak settings based on what game I am playing and that doesn't seem ideal. I just wanted something that's plug and play, and now I am questioning why I cheapd out! I could have spent an extra $100 on the MSI QD and be done with it. Please help me feel okay with my purchase or lead me to cancel, I don't know... I am feeling bummed out by my purchase, which is shitty cause I should be happy about this upgrade...

60Hz? Why would you use that? The monitor is g-sync compatible, so what you do there is use 144Hz even for 60FPS locked games. The best way to use such a display is 120Hz for the desktop, 144Hz for games with g-sync enabled. I have never used 60Hz mode on my g-sync monitor. It's completely useless, unless you want to connect a 60Hz game console to it.

What about 60fps capped games on console, would there still be benefit to running it in 120hz mode on a 144hz monitor, or is switching back to 60hz best? Also does Freesync on or off make any difference in this case?

I fear that my 3070 may not push all games to a okay framerate, I am very worried about this. Having to tweak setting constantly is unappealing...

I misunderstood what you said, so that Hardware Unboxed review was meaningless? Why did he shit on the 60hz performance, I completely misunderstood wow...

Ah. It's not native g-sync. It's a "g-sync compatible" freesync display. That means it has no variable overdrive so 60FPS will have issues even when the current mode is 144 or 165 Hz.

Yeah, well. What can you do. It is what it is.

Yeah that’s what I was worried about, I can still cancel the order and spend $100 more for something better, what do you think?

If you're playing graphically demanding games at low frame rates or you're going to use the monitor with a console, I would return it and get another model (beware, all 1440p IPS 144+Hz monitors have issues).

Here’s the thing I purchased 3070, shouldn’t it perform higher than that? Still bummed out right now but it should be fine right?

It really depends on the game. In some games it will struggle to reach 60 fps at max settings while in others it will achieve 200+ fps at 1440p. The RTX 3070 is not the best of the best, but it's a good card, that's for sure.
