Looking for: best 27" 240hz+ counter-strike monitor

Post by StuckIn2003 » 08 Jan 2021, 20:15

Background:

-I've been playing counter-strike for almost 20 years and am extremely sensitive to performance
-I had the ASUS vg248qe 1ms/144hz and was happy with it
-When COVID hit, and I was to work remote, I decided to upgrade to 1440p and went with the HP OMEN 27i along with another 27" 1440p IPS monitor as a second monitor
-even at overdrive 3, I can feel the difference not being at true 1ms. Over 20 years I've built up that sensitivity with recoil and gun behavior

For most things, the Omen 27i is great, but I am looking for:

The best possible 1440p monitor at 27", 240hz+, TRUE 1ms with MINIMAL overshoot/graphic issue (I feel like I got burned by the OMEN27i), I am cautious of using any 'overdrive'
I did see the 1080p viewsonic BB approved but am looking for 1440p to go with my secondary 27" 1440p monitor
Right now I am looking at the regular 27" TN panel Omen and the new ACER XB273U. Performance is my top priority with a very fast response time!

1/10 Omen 27i Update:

-I've been toying with different color settings and response levels because I am so frustrated. I wanted to confirm on level 4, fastest, I got the response I was seeking. I did confirm that to myself, and at first there was noticeable graphical issue with textures and blur. However, after leaving it on for some time, it is as if the monitor has 'warmed up' to the setting and I am only seeing VERY minimal issue compared to when I first turned on the setting. I have verified through both the on screen display and omen command center it is set to gaming color profile and level 4 / fastest response time. Quite a mystery and I do not see any other occurrences of this.

Other consideration:

-I'm open to most price points
-Should I wait for more 360hz monitors?

Just to provide another update to above 1/10 update: it seems the monitor has 'warmed up' to the fastest overdrive setting. While it's not ideal, I wouldn't call it unusable like I initially would have.

I am weighing several options for a new monitor, but am finally in a spot where I am pleased w/ the Omen 27i in Counter-Strike. All other use cases it is a very nice monitor.

27" is not ideal for counter strike. I play @ 1024x768 on an Omen X25F, and I am very happy with it.

If I were to switch, I'd go with XL2546K but I am waiting on new tech.

I have been playing cs many years, from 2000 and very sensitive to input lag as used CRT monitors. I used many TN 240hz: Benq XL2540, Alienware AW2518HF, LG 27GK750F, Acer xf252qx and always backed to my Asus vg248qe as it was fastest for me for input latency, subjectively all these 240hz TN had input lag (not so high, but it's higher than 144hz panels and 240hz IPS panels), Acer xf252qx was the fastest, but not so comfortable as Asus vg248qe, I changed vg248qe to VG279QM and very happy with it from March. Input lag of this panel is really impressive, you can choose any of these monitors as it the same panel: VG272X(XV273X), VG279QM, AW2720HF, XG270, but if you want 2k then probably AW2721D (but I'm not sure about input latency as there is still no details reviews for it and it can be another panel)

As for comfort with 27 in CS GO - it depends from your ingame resolution and stretching I think, I play with black bars 1024*768 on VG279QM and it's better then 24.5 as I see opponents better, but it's hard to concentrate with full 27 display if you stratching it or use 16:9, so to my opinion it's better to go for 24.5 if you use full display, but 27 with black bars is better choice(imho).

Hi, thank you both for your reply. I play 1.6 (hence stuckin2003 :)) mainly on 27" 640x480 black bars on my OMEN 27i. Like I said, on the extreme setting I can get it close to feeling like my VG248QE but it has motion issues from time to time. I completely agree with you sk1p, something about the VG248QE feels so snappy and responsive. Playing the same game for nearly 20 years it is not something that is just in my head. Like you, I went from CRT to the VG248QE.

After seeing some of the issues with the ACER/Alienware I am more nervous to pull the trigger on an bleeding edge tech IPS until more detailed response time reviews come out. I'm also considering the XL2746S and VG279QM which are 27" but 1080p.

I will keep you guys updated!

I have to chip in and say please ignore anyone that tells you 27" is no good for CSGO. I've played CS for almost 20yrs also and went from an XL2420 to an XL2720 After all, sitting 2ft from a 24" screen gives you the same FOV as sitting 2.25ft from a 27". As with choosing your CSGO resolution, it's 100% preference. For example, many CS players choose a stretched resolution to have physically larger player models on their screen. My reasoning for going from a 24" to a 27" was to have physically larger player models on my screen without stretching and distorting the aspect ratio, with the added bonus of better quality of life when sitting back and watching a video.

I've recently upgraded my PC to a 5900x and 3090 so I'm currently toying with the idea of switching to 27" 1440p 240hz also. However I'm undecided if I want to take a hit on FPS in the other games I play, such as Tarkov/Hell Let Loose (currently not sitting at 240fps @1080p even with that hardware). Although tech reviewers will say you want at least 1440p or 4k with a 3080/90, they are very casual gamers that seem to be content with 60fps.

If Benq had a 27 1440p 240hz TN monitor out I'd probably try that but I was considering the Omen X 27 also. I'm tempted to try it on Amazon prime but I don't know how easy it is to return a monitor that size. I've seen there are a couple of CSGO pros use the Omen X 27 so I'm confident the response time/gtg is good. I just suspect I'll be playing games and be frustrated that I could be making better use out of 240hz on 1080p. I'm particularly sensitive to FPS drops at around 100fps and I think 1440p may cause that, which is why I'm very hesitant to pull the trigger.

Couldn’t you run that 1440p monitor at 1080p? What’s the draw-back, non-integer scale factor leading to unaligned pixel blur?

The only thing about the Omen x 27 is that it doesn't appear to have a black equalizer or any new cool motion features. The price tag is ~$625 USD which is quite a lot. I've also seen conflicting VESA info. I think I am asking for too much since I don't want to be on the bleeding edge and am starting to drift towards 240hz 1080p.

I played 1.6 from 2003 to 2016, moving to CS GO was hard for me)), but for the test I launched cs1.6 and I always played 640*480 and as for me it's was normanl quality on Asus vg248qe, but on 27 panel is not playable)) sharp edges catch my eyes) (or idk how can I said it in English as it not my native :D)

640x480 for life!! I don't have any issue with 27" other than the motion handling which is challenging. Right now I'm sacrificing that for better tap feeling with sensitive guns like AK/deagle + AWP fast shooting as soon as the awp delay ends. Those guns I'm really sensitive to after nearly 20+ years and can feel it.
