4k@240hz+ DSC

Post by gem4ikl » 14 Jan 2021, 07:10

Hello!

I have a question - when we could expect 4k 240hz monitors?
I also saw info on wikipedia, that 4k 240 will be available over HDMI 2.1, but in DSC (Display Stream Compression). I'm asking, since i use HDMI, due to there are no DP capture cards and almost no DP switchers.
How this DSC will affect video quality? Will it add latency, or reduce quality (colors, resolution or something else)?

I think 4K@240 will arrive when GPU manufacturers release Displayport 2.0 I expect it in the next gen GPU. Current 4K@144/160Hz already need it to avoid the small DSC input lag.

Hope they all have integer scaling to allow also native FHD, because 4K@240 is a hell for the GPU in modern games. FHD option is a must be if the preference is maintain high refreshrate.

DisplayPort 1.4a 4K 120Hz 8bits without DSC

HDMI 2.1 Full 48Gbps:

4K 120Hz 12bits without DSC
4K 240Hz DSC only with 8bits. So no color compression artifacts, nor resolution reduction, based on Wiki info. A bit of banding maybe, like others 8bits screens. Allways a bit of lag, but should be very small if DSC is weel implemented in GPU and monitor, and linked with certified/shielded 48Gbps cabel.

I wanna see monitor manufactures implement features like the zisworks monitor.

If a 4k240hz monitor comes out they could have a integer scaled 1080p@480hz mode just by simply driving two pixel rows at once. So people who play competitive games could switch to a 480hz mode and use 4k240hz on the desktop.

zis used this to give a 4k120hz monitor other modes like 1080p240hz, 720p300hz, and 540p480hz. lag free and integer scaled.
