DSR factoring the wrong native res

Post by gfunkernaut » 22 Jan 2021, 22:43

I have a Sony 4k TV x900e, which according to the nvidia control panel, my tv's native res is 3840x2160, but there is one more res option above that, 4096x2160, that is available. When I select 4096x2160, the image gets stretched slightly beyond the tv's edges. If I use desktop resizing to fix it, the res becomes 3850x2160. When I enable DSR 4x, I see a new res option 8192x4320. That is based on the 4096 res not 3840. Does anyone know how to force DSR to multiply off of the reported native res according to the driver? or even a way to force a factor based on a custom res?

CRU (Custom Resolution Utility), make a new "Detailed Resolution" 3840x2160, and place it the first in the list (upper position) in case there are more than one here. Now this "UHD 4K" becomes the native in the GPU driver, and DSR 2x2 is now 7680x4320 "UHD 8K".

I wonder why nvidia cap DSR to only 2x2, in very old 3D games 4x4 can be used without performance issues over FHD monitor, and the difference betwhen 2x and 4x antialiasing color samples output is very noticeable. I tested Supersampling OGSS 4x4 with Nvidia Inspector for some D3D games, and has much more quality than DSR 2x2, but over UHD 4K monitor i not know if can work, need internal rendering at UHD 16K !

Hi thanks for replying. I opened up CRU and 3840x2160@60hz is already in the list at the top. Below that is 1920x1080@60hz. I tried hitting OK and then ran restart.exe. Screen went blank, windows device unplug/replug sounds played, picture came back. Enabled DSR 4x, and it is still multiplies my TVs max res not the native res as reported by the driver. 4096x2160@60hz doesn't even show up in CRU. Is there a way to disable or remove 4096x2160@60hz?

Here are some screenshots. I wanted to make sure CRU was working, so I edited the 1920x1080@60hz option and changed the refresh rate to 120hz, which my TV supports. It worked. Still don't know why the driver would read the native res as 3840x2160 but DSR goes by the TV's max resolution.

Select the extension block, and click edit to see if 4096x2160 resolution is stored here. If yes, try disable or remove. Don't worry about delete things, CRU is a software layer, screen EDID data is untouched. If you click the upper delete button, all this profile SONY TV is deleted, and in the next PC restart CRU get again the same data from EDID.

Select one Data Block and click Edit for see details, if there are 4096x2160 entries delete they. TV resolutions and HDMI should be the places where 4096 is hidded.

Ah ok, I found what I was looking for. I deleted any res that was 24,25,30, and 50hz. Also deleted any 4096 entry. So now DSR properly multiplies 3840x2160. Unrelated to post but maybe someone can shed light, Remember crysis and the HDMI 24p bug? Well I got rid of that 24hz hdmi res. I wanted to try crysis in 8k, so I did and the frame seems to be capped at 30fps. I'm pretty sure that a 3090 can do better than that. There is this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duBIK4K22QU of Crysis 3 running at 8k on a 3090 and the framerate is 45-55fps, so Crysis 1 should run faster than that. So this means that there is still a hidden res of 3840x2160@30hz somewhere in the driver still. I'll keep digging.

I stand humbly corrected, crysis 1 is still a PC melter. I was running it at 7680x4320@60hz alright, and the fps was in the range of 34-50. Thats without any AA. Amazing.
